Hello Everyone,
I have $ 1000.00 to spend to improve my sound. My current Onkyo TX-DS494 doing the job as a subwoofer amp is not working very well and I actually blew one of my speakers because of distortion.
I was thinking of purchasing a XPA-5 and have do the job for the Front Left / Front Right + my two 12 inch passive subs.
Is this is good option? I am open to other suggestions.
Thanks ahead of time for your input.

I saw that. But shipping used goods to Canada is a headache to say the least. If I was anywhere in the US, I might go for it.

Ah, yes. Didn't notice you were in Canada.

How is it a headache? It's really no different to shipping it anywhere else. Sure you have to pay some duties on it but that's about it. There are no extra forms to fill out for the sender and there isn't much you need to do either. The only thing you have to worry about is the exchange rate.

I have used a channel of an XPA-5 for a Dayton 15" HF version a few years ago. I found it difficult to get enough gain (I assume this was the issue?) out of the amp for it to punch hard compared to the BASH 300 I was using before. Not sure if that makes sense, but it just didn't seem to be getting enough power, which was a surprise to me.

Going this route is not ideal. I would opt for a dedicated amp for the subs. Take a look at the Dayton options from Parts Express or pro amps for something that would fit the budget.

what are the characteristics of the drivers on your subs? (sensitivity, impedance) are they closed or open? Seeing the amps in commercial subs these days, south of 300W is not common, there must be a reason... In your shoes I would by 2 "plate" modules for subwoofers, with characteristics that will suit your sub design, that will cost far less than 1000$ and be really more adequate. In fact you can buy and XPA-2 and 2 nice modules and stay in your budget ;o)
