Hello,
Yesterday I posted for the first time in the Lounge in a couple of years. I used to have a nice Home Theater set up in my basement, but now my situation has greatly changed due to a debilitating disability. For this reason, I am flat on my back in a small room most of the day every single day. All of my Home Theater equipment is definitely way too big physically for the area that I am now in. My audio video knowledge is about 5 years old, which includes about 4 years since my CRPS put me down. Yet, I still have a huge appetite for a great listening and viewing experience in my current environment, since it does indeed take my mind off of the horrific pain that I experience daily. My room is probably about 10'X13'. The entrance is to the front and left of my lounging area. Since I am beginning here from scratch, I figured that the most enjoyable place to start would be with some new front L/R speakers. I do have a HSU subwoofer that (although large) I am going to use in this environment. Below, please find the list of things that I will be adding to my A/V area:
1 pre-pro 1 amplifier (either 3 channel or 5) 1 center channel speaker 2 Front speakers (either book shelf or thin towers) 2 surround speakers
I will be setting up either a 5.1 or 5.1.2 listening environment. The reason I said one or the other is because I am not totally sold on Dolby's new Atmos technology. With this in mind, I may wait on purchasing a pre-pro/ receiver until I am fully decided on whether Atmos is something I want to invest in or not.
So, If any of you might be willing to help advise me on some good front L/R speakers to start with, I'd really appreciate it. Anything else you might want to say or add to help me develop something for this small room, I'd appreciate it. Please bear with me though. My disability has affected my cognitive skills, so if it appears that I'm a bit dense, I might be, but this disability definitely makes it even worse. So, please bear with me. Thank you.

If I was starting my system over again I'd probably base it around powered speakers, be it 2.1 or 5.1 etc. Logically power amps and speakers are the least changed items in any system. They don't go out of date technically like say processors/AVR's do in 2 to 4 years. Plus they live long lives if looked after, decades would not be unusual. Something like Airmotive 6's with their 2 x 200 wpc amplifiers together with a suitable complimentary sub woofer.
Processor wise I couldn't go past a UMC-200 (get in quick), simply unbelievable and unmatched value for money together with a truly fantastic sound. Easily kills anything else at 3 or 4 times the price. Not a big cost to upgrade in the inevitable 2/3 years of the next technology steps, Auro, Atmos, DTS-UHD etc. Sources, the UMC-200 can handle them all, with the addition of the XPS-1 if vinyl is on the list.
Cheers Gary

I see the UMC-200 is sold out. Will that be a product that they are continuing or is it being replaced? Further, I've never had powered speakers before. I've read about them, but never owned them. In my space, I have a feeling they would really be wonderful. What are people using for centers with the Airmotive 6's?

Another Airmotive 6, yes they will sell you one. When I checked last Friday there were still UMC-200's available in B Stock.
Cheers Gary

I gave up on Emotiva. I couldn't get anyone there to even respond and send me an email. Just laid down $5 Grand with other vendors. *shrugs* Oh well. Loved their products. But that is the way she goes!

Spike,
Sorry to hear of your disappointment with Emotiva. They are VERY responsive on the phone, but we've heard from others of less timely responses to emails. Possibly because they are all tied up providing top notch phone support. From your message, it seems you've moved on, but if your are not totally committed to other products and there is any opportunity for you to call them, I think you'd be pleasantly surprised!
Enjoy your new gear!

WOW I am so sorry to hear this , I myself had a life changing experience 15 years ago that I too to this day still suffer debilitating chronic back pain, but to the point do you really think you need to scape your hole currant system? is there maybe pieces you can salvage ? if so what? , I hate to get to personal but can you site up ? or are you bed ridden to a near flat position, these questions can greatly influence what you will need , like the system needs to be elevated beyond the norm to be at ear level this can greatly change the type of speaker that would work best . what system is it more geared for movies or music or is it equal , do you like it loud with lots of bass or more intimate and lade back and most of all how much are you willing to spend on this / are your ears gold or aluminum just to get things started. we need details more the better for use to help you .
Shame, patients is a virtue. *shrug* edit: spellcheck strikes again.
There is no sense in continuing to wait for an emailed response from a company that absolutely has not responded to the emails that one already sent them. If the company doesn't want people to email them, they should remove their email addresses from public viewing and not give it out to people, who just may think they will get a response. It is not fun nor easy to have a phoned conversation with the intent of spending what is for me a large sum of money, while screaming in agonizing pain due to disease. The next time I need audio video equipment, I might try with Emotiva again. By the way, the word is patience. Believe me, you don't want to be a patient with CRPS. It's nicknamed the suicide disease for a reason. Being a patient with that disease is not a virtue. Please do use a spell checker next time.

Shame, patients is a virtue. *shrug* And usually found in a Dr.s office or hospital - and often are waiting for hours on end. Patience is indeed a virtue. Indeed it is. After undergoing 5 surgeries in failed attempts to deal with my disease, I've done a lot of Dr's office and hospital sitting-and often waited for hours on end. So, I can even be patient with you.

Spike,
Now knowing more about your situation it's understandable why you were reluctant to pick up the phone to talk with Emotiva. If you are in need of additional equipment in the future, I hope that Emotiva will be more responsive to your emails.
So, tell us about the new equipment that you purchased. We're not exclusively "Blue Kool-Aid" folks here. We love to live vicariously with others. If you're up to it, share the info on your new equipment, how it's configured and how it sounds. Don't be a stranger!

Spike - on a separate note, have you thought about headphones at all? It could be another escape for times when you aren't feeling up for sitting up... or just want to listen to music.

Oh, are you ever spot on with this one. Do you have any recommendations for a set of headphones? I've purchased a couple and haven't really been impressed by them.
