anyone use the 4s for surrounds? My fiancé and I just bought a new house and the HT room is on the smaller side. I am hoping to pair my LCR stealth 6 with the airmotiv 4s for surrounds and move the two remaining stealth 6 up to the living room.
I know they will work, but I am curious if it would be a better idea to spend a little bit more and spring for the 5s or 6s. I can't say what listening levels will be, but the room is 12x10 with 8 foot ceilings. The room is completely sealed.
Thanks for the input fellers.

I don't find rear surrounds are that important in carrying huge amounts of low end and if they need to the sub can take care of it anyways, but I'm a middle of the road kinda guy so hey the 5s sounds perfect

I've never really noticed that much audio information in the rear channels beyond minor directional cues in the mid to higher frequency range. The 4s would be fine IMO.

I use the unpowered XRM 4.1s as my surrounds and they work just fine for that purpose.

I'll give an opinion on the other side
After having small surrounds forever I JUST took a leap and bought exact same high efficiency surrounds with identical 10" woofer and comoression driver as my mains
HUGE difference. And I mean huge. I was always in the camp of surrounds aren't important. But my mind has changed big time
Surrounds are way more than just supporting cast in today's movies.
Just another view to chew on.

Having identical speakers all around is obviously ideal. I can't attest for Bmoney as I lived with Pendragon monitors for surrounds. There is quite a bit coming from the surround channels and big beefy surrounds do make things come alive. However going to high efficient speakers like you did Bmoney is where most of your movie improvement came from. I'll stew on it for a bit. Last night my left surround output quit working. Speaker is fine, so I need to check the connect and output from he UMC1. Maybe it's time for that Xmc baby!

I agree. The is where most of the improvement came from. I was skeptical spending 2/3 of what I did on my mains for my surrounds but I was well worth it
Just wanted to give my thoughts on the importance of surrounds for you to weigh on
Good luck with whatever you decide. That being said. I DO think am4's will work nicely. If you are going smaller no need for 5's or 6'ss

I already have decent surrounds and since they aren't in the optimal spot and way too close to my head I can really tell what info in being sent there. There are times when there is some serious low end coming through considering they are just "effect" speakers more or less so I would suggest at least the 5S or wait and get a pair of the 6S used.

I have tested Airmotiv 4s, 5s, and Stealth 6 as a left rear. I used the same program (Furious 6, 2nd chapter, where the chopper flies from the left rear, to left front, to center, and pans to the right front). I could not detect any major difference among those 3...to my ears, they sounded the same. The SPL sounded the same; there was no increased lows coming from the stealth 6 or 5s...even if they are set to "large." And I've watched a lot of blurays with superb surrounds, but the 4s are great! They give me the sense of being surrounded by sound. If you have a smaller room, I would say the the 4S will do fine. The 3 most important speakers are the LCR...make them big, and match the timber. I love my 4s as surrounds...they work great. Another option is to get a true bipole surround...as that probably would fill the room better than the 4s...

Remember the new standard for surrounds is direct radiating. Not di or bi pole

Oh...my listening area is larger than yours--3 to 4 ft in each direction (except height). So if the 4s work fine for me, I believe they will be fine for your room.

It's in the dolby white papers Spent some time Googling, but all I come up with is Atmos stuff and a white paper from 2008 saying that dipole, bipole, and direct are fine for surround sound....I'll keep looking tonight when i get home.

I think it may be with the push of Atmos that direct radiating speakers are better for sound localization.

You may be right.
But another change is the recommendation of surrounds slightly above ear height. (Used to be 2-3 feet above). This also coincides with atmos

I don't think there are any right or wrong answers. It all just depends on the room.

From memory the Airmotiv 4's and 5's use the same air motion tweeter but the 6's use a different (larger) one. I've found that when sonic signature matching speakers the tweeter seems to be the most critical. So my only concern would be the difference between the 3 x 6's and the 2 x 4's sonically.
Cheers Gary

I have auditioned the Stealth 6; have the Airmotiv 6s, 5s, 4s. I can attest, according to my ears, the sonic signature matches for all of them...after all, they are the same tweeter technology, just different sizes, and crossover points. So basically, all of them have matching timber. In fact, the reviewer (at Sound&Vision) who reviewed the Stealth 8 and 6, said that using the Airmotiv 4s as surrounds to the Stealth 8s (LCR) worked out well...no issues. He gave the nod to the 4s as surrounds.
