Quote from an article;
“In terms of picture quality there’s no difference,” explains Jeff Park, Senior Technical Manager for HDMI Licensing, LLC, “It’s digital, so it’s all or nothing.”
So the short answer is no. If you think a more expensive cable is going to deliver a better picture, then you’re mistaken.
“Whether you have a $100 cable or a $5 cable, if they meet the same specification requirements there should be no difference,” says Jeff, “From a technical point of view they are exactly the same.”

Shielding and the connectors matter the most to me. If it passes the data right. Golden. I wouldn't spend $$$$$$$$$s though. Better places for the $$$$$$$ to go.

For PQ, yes as long as the data gets from point A to point B it doesn't matter. However some applications do require more than $5 cables if you want a more reliable connection. Example: I would spend some extra money on a well built cable that is a long run and hidden in the wall vs buying a no brand $5 cable of the same length. But I'm not doing it in the quest for a "better" picture, just a more trouble free one. The connectors are important. I like locking ones since HDMI always seem to work their way loose over time. (Or maybe I'm always swapping things around. )

Well, he would say that, wouldn't he? That's his job - to keep people paying the licensing fee.
Don't worry, when the next standard emerges, people will be shocked at the limitations of HDMI. That's the way tech works. Anyone remember SPS network protocol?

I just spent a few minutes looking at price lists from those "elite" cable manufacturers and once can spend $9,000 on an HDMI cable.
We all buy things with questionable value but come on.
