Hello all, a new week, a new small vignette into my cramped, or should I say cozy abode of theater, and music.
As I moved back to TN, my Asus G75VW was my entertainment machine. Complicated story, and boring what happened to my original gear. Some sold, and the rest complicated.
As Natalie Cole had sung, "we're starting all over again". My audio is central around the Mighty Good XMC-1, and Stealth 6, and Airmotiv 6S, my newly acquired Sharp LED 42 inch TV ( suspiciously the same size as the one I lost....like I said, complicated.). My Asus continues to perform admiral yeoman's work in my streaming music, and computerizing my life no end.
I wanted a great Blue Ray player for keeps, and no flavor of the month, it broke, must replace it 1 board, transport, lighter than the box it came in a sub $100.00 machine.
Optimized Oppo BDP-103
This player made a ton of sense. I need a transport for all the round gold, silver media I spin, and be able to stream the important other goodies to me such as Pandora, YouTube, Netflix etc. Interestingly Amazon Prime is not included so Bosch, and all must come from my Asus affectionally known as "The Beast". No biggie, Easy peasy, Japanesie.
Build it right, and pretty, cool.
A moment of note about the packing, and boxing. Superb experience here. The player wrapped ingeniously in a nice textile bag, the accessories in their own box, and all this organized in high density foam. You feel you got something special here, and not that crumbly white styrofoam packing that desintigrates before your eyes.
Built like a fine player should be. Like 21 lbs. of built well. Your usual higher end fare, Isolated, and segmented power supplies, and Isolated mechanically, and electronically transport. Unlike the very vacant sub $100.00 machines out there, there is allot going on here. Wireless, and Ethernet support, and automation support along for the ride naturally. No Ejector seat, and I never joke about my work 007.
As shown by the image here, there is little room for say a new patio deck, 3 car garage etc. Just inside the things you need, nothing you don't. Single ended support exclusively on this model, goto the 105 if Balanced is your Reason D'etre.
If Emotiva made a blue ray, I bet it would be like this inside. Organized, well laid out, well isolated etc. The solid Vincent approval of cool, they care looks build inside.
Okay not turning this into a Magazine, so your boss doesn't wonder what you are doing. Hook ups, and thoughts of performance.
Easy, and looks, and sounds great. Just buy one!
Well, okay, I'll expound on that a bit further.
Setup is just like any Blue ray player really. Got an HDMI cable? Check, comes with one in the box, or you could use the Emotiva HDMI cables, or pay too much for someone else's. You get the picture. Hook up the Wireless dongle that also comes with, or hard wire via the Ethernet cable to your favorite router. Ethernet cable not included by the way.
Attach the IEC power cable that came with , or your favorite Cryo whatever power cable of choice, and plug into your power manager like an Emotiva CMX-6 or your favorite whatever you have.
Sight, and sound, and of mind...
Okay with that hooking up all done. Oh did you read the thorough comprehensive manual inside the box too. Well, just in case you didn't. The plastic well laid out, but busy backlit remote control allows you to setup picture attributes, audio ones, and also your stream sync with your favorite Netflix, YouTube account, and so on. Hookups are so easy, makes you wonder why I need the instructions. The menu structure is well laid out, and easy to follow. No desperate programmer wanting to get us to Mars sooner with this player, so easy is the theme here.
Running through the Emotiva XMC-1 via HDMI, the cable that came with, and another cheapy going out to my newly acquired Sharp LED, yields what I expect from Oppo. A crazy good picture with details in the black and white, the colors that pop, and the scaling that is superb. the QDEO goodie works a peach. I am so immersed in the picture, I am building up my Blue Ray collection no end!
Streaming the YouTube is awesome too, as it will use highest quality. Yeah I know, it IS YouTube, yeah I get it, but for how the Oppo is doing, I am spending more time there than usual. Netflix does just peachy too, a fast wireless connection never hurts, and a hardwired one is always better IMHO. No funny artifacts, or outworldly strangeness in audio either, it just shows it like it should.
No Darbee on this one, also didn't need the Balanced 105 version, technical reasons, it is a 42 inch TV, and I am cheap.
So should everyone get one of these Oppo's. Yes, I say get one for your enjoyment of your Blue Ray collection. You do have more choices like a great favorite eatery you maybe thinking of. See www.oppodigital.com for more 411 on the 103, and all. I love mine very much.
An unqualified buy it, and enjoy it. No considerations at all. You will love it.
Thanks for your time.
