I just built a dedicated jriver server. I'm also buying an XMC-1 before May 1st.
is there an advantage to using one of Emotiva's dedicated DAC's versus the USB port of the XMC-1?

Your buying a XMC-1!!!! Your done as far as a DAC goes. Don't waist any money on a separate piece of gear unless you prefer a Saber DAC. Personally I believe the DAC in the XMC-1 sounds the same as the best of the Emo DAC s, DC-1. save your coin for something else, media or even a cheap laptop plus an external hard drive plus JRivers. this will accommodate all of you CDs and high res music. Edit; ok, you've built it already, plug it into the XMC,,,,,,,YOUR DONE, PLAY AND ENJOY,!!
