Does the XSP-1 have a mono switch like the USP-1? I found that to be a very nice feature when listening to mono vinyl. I want the XSP-1 for the balanced outputs but not at the sake of losing this feature. I thought about how to put this in a better light,,,,,,but I can't, sorry,,,,,,,,,,upgrade your music and enjoy!!! or you could always buy mono recordings and cartridge for that new TT! OH! Buy the XSP-1 no, it doesn't have that feature. welcome to to one of the greatest forums on the net! So very happy you're here! It's better now that you have found us.

I've had the USP-1 and XSP-1 gen 2. In my listening, there was a noticable difference. The USP-1 sounded bright, whereas the XSP-1 was more neutral. I am pretty sensitive to treble and cant stand bright sounding gear. The soundstage wasn't as deep or wide on the USP-1. I'd say that the precise volume control and channel tracking alone is worth at least $300 over the USP-1. But the USP-1 is a decent preamp and only you can decide whther it is worth the money. Your ears, your $.

I was considering upgrade from USP-1 to XSP-1 but in the meantime I made two small changes to my USP-1, XPA-2 setup and I am enjoying the results so much that I will keep it for a while: 1. To improve the USP-1 volume control I added the Harrison Labs 12 dB RCA Line Level Attenuators between the preamp and XPA-2. It really helped but what I did not expect was how it improved the sound quality, I listen mostly to classical music and I am rediscovering the pieces I thought I knew so well. 2. I connected the balanced output of my Sony HAPZ1-ES DAC to XPA-2 directly using Control Freak, the sound is less dynamic without the preamp but somewhat cleaner. I cannot decide what I like more.
But clearly my favorite is USP-1 with Harrison attenuators. Nothing against XPS-1, I am sure I will upgrade my preamp eventually but for now I am happy.
Emotiva: USP-1, XPA-2. Music server, DAC: Sony HAPZ1-ES, speakers: Totem Hawks.
