Hello everybody,
Emotiva's sale continues to cause me grief. I have a strong desire to purchase two XPA 1's to drive my 27 year old Magnapans. My current system sounds great, but the urge to try mono blocks is very strong. I primarily enjoy two channel listening with occasional 5.2 channel video. Here's what I have:
Magnapan MG 2.5R speakers for the front two channels Polk Audio center channel and surround channel speakers Two, REL T7i subwoofers Emotiva XPA 5 amp Emotiva XSP 1 pre-amp Emotiva UMC 200 processor Project Xtension 10 turntable with 5 pin DIN to XLR cable Project Phono Box RS preamp Oppo 105 D
As I said above, my listening is primarily 2 channel using the turntable. Like the XPA 1, both the XSP-1 and the Project Phono Box RS are fully balanced, differential units. The big question is how much will the XPA's add?
If Emotiva's sale had ended July 15, my constant upgrade thoughts would be over. Thanks for any and all thoughts.
Gary

I think it will add a decent amount of power. Especially if you are hitting high SPL's with it. But since you already have two powerful subwoofers - it's questionable how much is needed if you are using a high pass on the XSP-1 to exclude the bass to the maggies..

I have used the XPA-2 for my Mag 1.7I, and now have 2 XPA-1 in use for the 1.7's. Either will work well with the 1.7's, so assume that would include the 2.5R.
The entire speaker seems a bit more alive with the additional power.
Anyway, you KNOW you want mono blocks, so just give in.....

I have used both XPA-2 Gen 1 and now a pair of XPA-1 Gen 1 monoblocks with my Maggie 2.5Rs for a couple of years in my 2 channel set up where I have one sub. I have been happy with both sets of amps, and so far noticed little difference between the two (the XPA-2 is a great amp), except the monoblocks have more available umph when driven hard and work less hard during moderate listening sessions.
While I'm not sure I would use ribbon Maggies in an HT setup, they are power hungry, and with HT sonic excursions being so extreme (downright ridiculous at times), a power upgrade wouldn't hurt ya.
And yes, as garbulky says, route low frequencies to the subs with bass management (unsure how you use an XSP on 5.1 HT).
