I have been using a HRT Music Streamer II for a few years. I have wanted to go above the 96/24 top end of the HRT. I received my Big Ego today. Plugged it into my MacMini, configured MIDI to used the Big Ego and here we go. I run a Yamaha A-S1000 and a pair of Polk Audio RTiA9 speakers.
I used Channel D Pure Music and Amarra. Music was Elton John Yellow Brick roady (96/24), Eagles Hotel California (96/24), Lynrd Skynrd (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd) (192/24) and some DSD classical music from L2.
Now I do not consider myself a audiophile by any means. I have listed to all kinds of main stream audio gear for many years. Never listened to any of the audiophile components (couldn't afford them anyway)!. I started my love of music in the 70's and it continues today. My hearing is not as good as it used to be, but I do know what sounds good (at least to me).
The Big Ego is better than the HRT Music Streamer II. The sounds of cymbals are a little crisper, the bass is a little deeper (sometimes seems a little to deep). Now I normally don't go above 96/24, but it would be nice to have that option. So I loaded Lynrd Skynrd (192/24). Sharper and cleaner that the lower resolution FLAC version.
The DSD classical music sounded very clean and easy to listen to. About the same as the higher resolution FLAC music.
I did not try out the headphone output. But the filter settings for the headphone output are intriguing.
All in all, I would highly recommend the Big Ego. It is nice to have the option to go above 96/24. Price is right, sound is good, form factor is good - can't go wrong with the Big Ego.
