Been using a upa500 to drive my 5.1 system for a couple of years and have loved that amp. Have read that reserve power will help the punch of most speakers. Finally gave in and ordered the XPA-5 to find out. Don't need the power as I only use maybe 10 watts to drive my speakers to LOUD levels. I am using speakers that are 98 to 100db at one watt. So will I notice the change? I love the punch of my jamborees and cornscalas, hope the xpa-5 makes it that much better!!

In your situation, I doubt you will notice any difference that isn't actually placebo-induced. I didn't.

Headroom is never a bad thing if one can afford it, and I'm one that encourages to buy more power amplifier than is needed at the moment as you never know what power hungry speakers one may upgrade to in the future. In this case, I don't discourage moving to an XPA-5, and you may hear sound dynamics at reference levels that you haven't with your UPA-500, but if you don't regularly listen at reference levels I doubt you'll hear any differences at normal listening levels.

The first thing I noticed with the XPA-5 was the speed of response (some people might call it punch or impact, maybe slam). My previous non Emotiva multi channel amps played as loud as I need but they didn't have the instantaneous response that the XPA-5 has. Going back to them they sound lazy, slow, unresponsive, whilst being just as loud as confirmed by ears and SPL measurements. It'll be interesting how you find the comparison to the UPA-500.
Cheers Gary

I am expecting it to mostly help with movies. I like to pour the coals to it on movies, I try to get that full impact the directors put into some movies. I am sure for the money I am spending it is going to sound much better on music. Even it is only in my head LOL!! My theory is you can never have to much clean power.

total2727, It would be greatly appreciated if you would post your sig (gear) so that we may have a better idea of where your starting from and where your hoping to go. I love the XSP-5 and anybody that employs one will also, but we can't evaluate the impact that it may have on your system without your current sig.
I personally believe that every HT should have at least One of them,,,,,,,,,Object based systems,,,,,,,,more!!! 8)

I have to admit, there was a difference using the baby xpa-3 in replacement to my xpa-700 for my fronts even thru the latter was used to biampifly my fronts. Especially for movies, series and such. Hope your miliage will be the same!!? Mel

Fwiw my speakers are 95db sensitive. For a short while I was without the xpa5 and running through avr amps. O felt as though somthing was missing. When I got the xpa5 back in the system I found it was the amp. It made things much clearer and separated. Much more dynamic. Not sure if it was placebo or not. But whatever it is. It is worth the peace of mind knowing they are in the chain

Considering the speakers you use and their associated efficiency, also factoring in that you said you don't listen at particulary loud levels.... I don't know if the change is going to jump out at you and be super dramatic... But add me in as a +1 for the extra dynamic headroom bandwagon. You may notice some extra little finite details that might not have been there before... To be non-technical..you may get some extra sparkle that may be icing on the cake. And with difficult recordings or complex output you may find that your sound is able to change or turn on a dime... If you notice any of this.. I'd say it was rather worth the change.

Power doesn't kill speakers, clipping does. Years ago (2001?) I bought Sony 555 ES and it fried 2 woofers on 2 different speakers watching movies. Returned & upgraded to more power and never had another problem..

Well got it in and hooked up. Wow this thing is a beast!! Had to go back and drop my gains way down, this sucker has power in spades!! Have played a few movie clips and some music and am loving the sound so far. Biggest change so far is in the subs, I did have them hooked to the upa200, but switched them to the xpa-5 for the extra 100wpc (4ohm) and boy it really woke them up. I am currently running LCR+subs on the xpa-5, and have my surrounds on the upa200. Need to run dirac as I have made some changes to my system. Will post more after I have had time to listen more.
