I am a victim Covid-19. I was laid off along with about 480 people in my company. Yes it can happen to anyone, and yes it happened to me too. Covid-19 was just the last straw that is straining my company, so it is always a combination of factors that cause this kind of event. I am staying positive and looking very ardently for the right next thing. Stay safe and keep your options open.

I am almost 50 years old and never remember such a huge response to an illness. Can someone tell me if this is the most communicable and most deadly virus to hit our shores since the 70s? Also, can someone tell me if we have the ability to shut down the economy again next year if there's a similar threat for 2020/2021?

Once this is done, if you cannot be rehired, you will find a new path which will be even better.

I am older than you and have never seen anything like this, or the response to it. There have been some pretty nasty viruses in the past and even the seasonal flu that kills 30,000 - 60,000 a year is not treated like this. This is the fear of the unknown. Our economy is strong. It will recover. There will be a vacine. Even if this disease mutates for next season, a vacine can be pushed out much faster to combat it as they do with the flu every year.

The annual flu has infected/killed far more people in USA than covid-19. "The flu has sickened 36 million Americans since September (2019) and killed an estimated 22,000, according to the CDC." The reaction and total shutdown of the economy is way off the charts in comparison!

If I get it will it kill me or just give me a runny nose...or...or....

Because this virus is far more contagious than the yearly flu. It's about potential to kill and cripple the country. And, compared to the flu, 10 times more likely to require hospitalization and 10 times more likely to kill someone who is infected. Annual Flu vaccine only has an efficacy of 29% for most recent years (2018-2019). No cure for FLU or Cold for that matter. www.cdc.gov/flu/vaccines-work/effectiveness-studies.htmI would question your 10 times figures unless you can cite CDC, WHO or some vetted study? The following is from an interesting paper that might be worth your time reading: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/eci.13222Coronavirus disease 2019: the harms of exaggerated information and non-evidence-based measures John P.A. Ioannidis Pull quote: "Conversely, “influenza” attracted 30- to 60-fold less attention although this season it has caused so far about 100-fold more deaths globally than coronavirus." and "Leaving the well-known and highly lethal SARS and MERS coronaviruses aside, other coronaviruses probably have infected millions of people and have killed thousands. However, it is only this year that every single case and every single death gets red alert broadcasting in the news." Problems with early estimates and responses to the COVID-19 epidemic A highly flawed non-peer-reviewed preprint claiming similarity with HIV-1 drew tremendous attention; it was withdrawn, but conspiracy theories about the new virus became entrenched Even major peer-reviewed journals have already published wrong, sensationalist items Early estimates of the projected proportion of global population that will be infected seem markedly exaggerated Early estimates of case fatality rate may be markedly exaggerated The proportion of undetected infections is unknown but probably varies across countries and may be very large overall Reported epidemic curves are largely affected by the change in availability of test kits and the willingness to test for the virus over time Of the multiple measures adopted, few have strong evidence, and many may have obvious harms Panic shopping of masks and protective gear and excess hospital admissions may be highly detrimental to health systems without offering any concomitant benefit Extreme measures such as lockdowns may have major impact on social life and the economy; estimates of this impact are entirely speculative Comparisons with and extrapolations from the 1918 influenza pandemic are precarious, if not outright misleading and harmful

Thinking of Chuck Elliot RIP
I dropped out when this was happening as we moved and it was going to be a while on the remodel before I would be back into my gear. This was a hard fought 3 year battle and I am so glad he got well enough to go on a cool vacation and do some diving. I am also thinking he had a liver transplant prior but I could be confusing Chuck with someone else. Ultimately, given what we are all going through now is to make all our time count and enjoy our moments. God bless you, Chuck.

Too bad you have to post such nonsense when we are experiencing (some of us personally) this terrible pandemic.

My question is, why hospitals are collapsing if the numbers from covid are lower than the seasonal flu? Simple - the number of cases is rising very quickly, the severity is intense, and the equipment (ventilators, ICU beds, and staffing related to those) needed to try to save the patient is not in sufficient supply. As an example, if you look at the # of ICU beds in Atlanta, there are <1000. So...if >1000 end up needing one, it's a game of musical chairs and someone loses out. There are currently ~1600 cases in ATL...not all needing an ICU bed. But the total count can change quickly...and overrun the # of beds available...as happened in Italy, Spain, and soon to be NYC if it's not already happened. With COVID-19, the onset of symptoms can be far more severe than typical flu, which is why it is also known as "SARS-CoV-2" of which "SARS" stands for "severe, acute respiratory syndrome". It comes on and can take over the whole lung. Ordinary flu doesn't do that typically. And, regarding its quick spread...a person with COVID-19 is likely to infect 1.5-3 people before they even know they are infected. That's more than happens with ordinary flu. Add to that, there's no vaccine for COVID-19, but there is for the flu. So, it can spin out of control fast and it's very severe. I know 3 who have it - including Sir Chuck of the Nut. Mark
