Mr Freeze, on the back of the receiver you should have r/c/ l pre outs. Connect interconnects (rca) from them to the corresponding channels on the amp and you are there.

On the back of the dennon there is a pre-out section, run RCA cables from the front left, right , and center there, to the inputs of the XPA 3.

Those are digital cables, they will work. I would suggest emotiva rca cables. They are a little more expensive 7.99 for a pair. I have some emotiva RCAs and the build quality is great

Deepfreeze, please don't ever hesitate to ask any newbie questions. We all started as newbies and many of us are happy to help if we can. You need one single RCA cable for each amplifier channel, left, center and right. You can buy either two pairs of RCA cables like used for left and right stereo channels on a source component like an old tape deck, etc. and tape off the ends of the unused 4th RCA, or just pull a pair apart and you have two single RCA's (usually easy to do). Or you can buy 3 single RCA's. Quality audio RCA cables are what you need. Yes, be sure and use the unbalanced RCA inputs on the back of the XPA-3 amp (great choice!) and the L/C/R pre-outs on the Denon. Also be sure you have the selector switch on the back of the XPA-3 to unbalanced. Be very careful sliding the RCA end onto the amp and pre. It helps if you rotate the end of the RCA slightly while you push it in. www.monoprice.com/category?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021814 (These are pairs ... need to split one, very good quality and come in lengths from 3ft and longer ..... Monpirce ships very fast when in stock) The Emo MRCA 1 Meter (two channels ) shown in above post are very good quality and you would need to buy two @ $7.99 each and split them and only one meter long. emotiva.com/products/interconnects/mrca-1-meterThe Monoprice #2681 (3') you show a link to above is also very good (slightly stiffer) for pre/amp connections and it comes in singles so you need three of the correct length. www.monoprice.com/category?c_id=102&cp_id=10236

Thanks! Does it matter if the Left, right or center speaker goes into a specific channel on the emotive channel 1,2,3?

Thanks! Does it matter if the Left, right or center speaker goes into a specific channel on the emotive channel 1,2,3? No, but for convenience, The back of the XPA-3 is labeled as FR,C,LF

The difference should be quite a bit. I have an XPA-3 also, I went from an Onkyo receiver to using the XPA-3 on the pre-outs and was amazed. What speakers are you using?

You might refer to yourself as a newbie but you've made some excellent choices so far. Both the Silver 8's and the Denon AVR-X4100 W are excellent choices for the money. The Silver 8's were tested out at about 5 ohms impedance. Most AVR receivers are fairly limp into the 4 ohms area but the Denon model W is stronger for a receiver. Denon is rated at about 125w with 2 channels driven into 8 ohms. With 5 channels driven into 8 ohms it might be in the 80-90+ watt range. Into 5 ohms/ 5ch it might be higher, guessing here at about 125watts+. The Emo XPA-3 is rated at 330 watts/ch into 4 ohms with all 3 ch operating and slightly less into 5 ohms. What this all means is that the Denon has a very decent amp versus the run of the mill AVR receiver in todays market, very good. However, the XPA-3 is a real powerhouse for your three front channels. The Silver 8's tested out at about 88.5 dB's sensitivity which means they are about average putting out volume versus power in. At low to medium loudness you might hear a slight audio advantage with the Emo XPA-3 but when you pour on the power the Emo amp will not run out of steam and remain ultra clean when needed for high dynamic/volume output. That is when the tremendous Power in the XPA-3 will be most apparent. The XPA-3 is a no-brainer driving your front channels. The Denon weighs 28lbs and the XPA-3 weighs 58 lbs. All that weight means a very beefy amp! If you have or plan to add rear surround channel speakers (2 is usually fine depending on your room) I recommend staying with Monitor Audio matching speakers if possible. For good HT performance you will absolutely need one or maybe even two quality subs. Check with us for recommendations. Do not skimp on the subs and I highly recommend you go with online direct dealers such as SVS, HSU Research , PSA, Rythmik or Outlaw Audio. Stay away from expensive speaker wire and connectors, all a huge waste of money.

my current: Monitor audio silver 8s, Silver Center, Silver 1s for rears + DUAL Rythmik FV15HP... everything is new haven't even tested it, its waiting to be put together Wow! You've done a great job putting together this system. That is one very fine system! Super choices for the speakers and subs. Please consider designating all the Monitor Audio speakers as "Small" in the Denon speaker set up section and not as Large (Full Range) regardless of what the Denon Audyssey does (Audyssey can make mistakes ... manually over-ride it if necessary). Small doesn't mean the Silver 8's and others are small in size, it means that you are sending the tones below about 80Hz to the subs and not to both the subs and the five speakers. There is some disagreement on this but this prevents the low bass from going to both the mains and the subs which results in less defined bass and lots of boom. This also takes all the low bass reproducing strain off the XPA-3 and Denon amps and places the bass below 80Hz on the dedicated excellent amps in the FV15HP's.
