Hello everyone. Im wondering if anyone here knows some type of device where the XPA 5 amplifier will automatically turn on once sound is coming from my sonos speakers when watching TV, streaming netflix?
On sonos I have it setup where all the sonos speakers turn on once you start watching tv/or play music but I decided to switch to sonos connect with XP5 Amplifier to power up 4 ceiling speakers. I don't want to have the amp stay 24/7 of course so trying to see if anyone had any ideas how I can have it Auto Sense/Auto turn on once sonos speakers are activated with sound

I've been looking for similar but haven't really found anything. I think niles or someone makes an auto-sensing switch but if I recall, you need 2 parts for a total of $200 or more. And no 12v trigger, just a power switch. I figured I would wait for the xda-3, maybe they would build it in.

I use a Panamax power conditioner that has 6 outlets that are trigger controlled by the Sherbourn processor to turn my three pro amps on and off. There are other devices that can do this as well. S mart strips work well - mostly. They have a single master outlet that once enough power is flowing will turn other outlets on. I have one of those in the bedroom. Its activated by a Yamaha 773 AVR that supplies power to the tv and dvd player when it comes on. When the timer shuts off the AVR the other outlets are shut off also. Works for me. Maybe your Sonos will pull enough power to activate a smart strip - maybe not. I had trouble getting it to work with an Emo USP-1 preamp which draws about 30w tops. I have a Belkin smart strip that I bought some years ago that requires about 50w draw to activate but needs less than 20w or so to shut off and the Sherbourn wouldn't trigger it off - just on. The Panamax is deluxe compared to the smart strip. FWIW I bought the Panamax on ebay for $100 shipped. They sell for 3x that new. What I received looks new - just no warranty. It also eliminated a slight buzz I had with the amp that drives the surrounds. It wasn't very loud but now its gone - maybe power conditioners are a good thing? All I see is a somewhat expensive way to turn my three amps on and off with an extra - no more buzz.

ryuspeed you got the name of that "niles" product? Niles AC3 is probably what he's thinking of - simple and effective - uses a 12v trigger to turn on/off. There are a couple of other units you might want to look at too. Do a search on ebay for a Panamax unit if you don't mind buying used. Not all of them have the trigger feature so you'll need to do some homework. If you look on the back of the 5300 you'll see a small white circle around a 3.5mm mono port. Any of them that have that will be what you want.
