*bleep*OO'S NEST' AT 40 YEARS .......... The film grossed $108 million in the U.S, but its most extraordinary success was in Sweden, where "*bleep*oo's Nest" remained in theaters for a record-breaking 11 years........... Nicholson Wasn't First Choice. Not even close. Jack Nicholson was cast only after Marlon Brando, Steve McQueen and James Caan turned down the role of Randle Patrick McMurphy, the inveterate rebel who bluffs his way into a psych ward to avoid a stint in prison, Also on the original short list was Gene Hackman, the favorite of author Ken Kesey. But director Milos Forman's first choice—nixed by United Artists—was Burt Reynolds........... Anne Bancroft, Ellen Burstyn and Jane Fonda all declined to play McMurphy's icy nemesis, Nurse Ratched. Lily Tomlin signed on, but then defected for Robert Altman's "Nashville"—taking a part that was originally to be played by Louise Fletcher, a relative unknown who'd appeared on TV shows like "Perry Mason" before taking an 11-year break from acting to raise her kids. In the end, Tomlin and Fletcher essentially swapped roles........... (I never get tired of watching it.) Wow, can't imagine that movie with anyone except Jack in the main role. Well maybe Gene Hackman, but none of the others. Randle McMurphy would have been a completely different sort of character. Now for the women, I can easily imagine any of those others in that role. I guess there's lots of women who are cold as ice out there. Meryl Streep could have done it, too.  But as good as Louise Fletcher was in that role, totally deserving of her Oscar, her performance would have paled next to Hillary. In fact, maybe Bill could have played the lead role. |

In retrospect the casting choice was perfect - I can't imagine changing that cast and making it more convincing. Would it have been the success its had with a different cast? Hard to know but the story line was so good it would have been hard to screw it up - although as we well know Hollywood is more than capable of ruining a great story.
Ken Kesey wrote the book that the movie is based on. I read the book long before the movie had been announced. He also wrote Some Times A Great Notion - also made into a movie. It wasn't a tragic-comedy like *bleep*oo was but I enjoyed both the book and the movie. How could you lose with Fonda and Newman headlining?
*bleep*oo had me in stitches in the first few pages. No movie could recreate on film what Kesey put into those first words although they did try. I knew I was going to read the entire book - I did - at least twice that I can remember. Kesey's description of Nurse Ratchet bulling her way down the hallway is something everyone should read. It is hilarious.

Interesting tidbits, Sir Chuck!
Nurse Ratched was indeed quite the stellar performance. Jack was amazing, but I have to say...the whole cast really nailed it. The actors all did fine jobs of bringing you into the story and making it seem quite real. Plenty of people have tried and failed to play people with mental issues, but they pulled it off.
Robin Williams did an admirable job in The Fisher King,but even in that, in many times he was just being Sir Robin instead of the character with severe mental trauma he was supposed to be. Still, that movie really is a favorite of mine.

Mark One Flew Over the *bleep*oo's Nest Five Easy Pieces The Fisher King Awakenings (a few of my favorite movies) Mark, speaking of actors portraying movie characters with mental handicaps. When I saw What's Eating Gilbert Grape I had no idea who Leonardo DiCaprio was. I was 100% convinced that this was an actual handicapped person playing the part. I told my girlfriend at the time who watched the movie with me that I was so impressed that this young mentally challenged boy could do such a good job in the movie. Of course only later I realized it was DiCaprio, what a brilliant performance! For me it was so much more believable than Tom Hanks, who always during the movie Forrest Gump seemed to me to be Hanks playing the part, never completely believable to me. Another great job of impersonation in a movie was Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire. If I had just walked into that movie without any previous knowledge I would have had no idea that was Robin. On the other hand in the movie Tootsie, It was obviously Dustin Hoffman. |

Lennie D in Gilbert Grape was amazing, as well as the others. Leo, though,really was amazing. Some actors can go into a special place...and he did for sure. The others you mention also...there was an empathy each created that was so special.
