You do have to pay extra than the basic Amazon Prime for 1080, I think all the free stuff is 480P, though it is 16x9. Most Prime content is 1080P, and there is no extra charge. Mainly depends upon whether the movie or TV stuff was digitized in HD. A lot of older material is not, most newer stuff is. Another solution for Boom would be to buy a cheap Sony BD player. They link directly to Prime, deliver the full rez + 5.1 via HDMI. I use an ethernet connection on that system. I also watch movies at the kitchen table on a Kindle Fire HDX, via wireless, with the audio going to a Logitech Z623 powered speaker system via Bluetooth. That is only 2-channel, but the video comes through at 1080P over the wireless just fine. That speaker system is a excellent for the money, BTW. 35 wpc satellites hide nicely amongst the salt and pepper shakers, the 130W (RMS) sub hides under the table. $115 at Amazon.

The Prime content will always have it's own section and has a "Prime" label on the top left of the content window. There are also movies that aren't "Prime" that you can buy or rent. While you can stream "Prime" content for free viewing, you can buy it for when it is no longer offered for streaming as "Prime" content, and that is where you'll see the renting/buying the content as SD or HD. Obviously if a movie or show wasn't filmed in HD, then it won't actually look near as good as a newer movie or show that was. That's right. Movies on Prime come and go. Older movies seem to be permanent, but many newer ones will be free on Prime for a while, then revert to buy or rent.

I love Amazon Prime Music Streaming. LCSeminole is right, the Prime "free" content has its own section. I've had a HTPC with HDMI hooked up to my system for years, and I love the versatility.

Just get a smart TV. My Samsung has the Amazon app built in. Just curious geebo, are you getting Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 from your Samsung? I'm just not used to seeing "DD Plus 5.1" on the XMC-1 display from any source.

I have an old school roku, the fireTV, the fireTV stick, popcornhours out the wazzo... and in my opinion. If you're looking to stream Amazon Prime videos you can't beat the FireTV. Its made specifically to do what you're asking for really. The menus (no apps needed, prime videos selected right from the default menus), the remote (voice search), everything is catered to watching Prime Videos. If you start dumping into Amazon's eco system like with the photos and music, the fireTV becomes more and more worthy.
The firetv will run other major apps like SlingTV (live tv via internet) and Plex (for playing your personal movies on a computer or server).
If you want to get into netflix, or hulu, that can be done as well. But its not any better then the roku in that regard (the roku menus are probably nicer truthfully for those apps), but for Amazon stuff you can't beat the FireTV in my opinion. Its what the box was made for.

Daughter added Amazon to our picture hub. Most programs have a fee. Netflix is much superior.
From Amazon --Started watching"The man in the High Castle" Interesting
