I have a 2TB Apple time capsule that serves as my router and NAS server for my Sonus system. Works great, 4-5 years old and going strong..

I had not even heard about that! That said, it is the most different of all options I have looked at and has me quite intrigued! I read a bit just now and want to look a bit more, but I like it from what I read so far. I would have to do some re-wiring of my hardwired portion of my network, but that could be a bonus for other reasons. Thanks for sharing that one! Mark

Looks like the ASUS RT-AC68u is a beast vs. many other options when it comes to performance. I have been reading pro reviews and they are constantly topping the Netgear products I was looking at originally. The Google option sure looks interesting, but there is not much out there about it that has a lot of substance to it. Here's a good reco for the ASUS... Best WiFi routers articleMark

Loop 7 about how much coverage are you getting fro a single router? geebo are you having multiple routers for the same reason as loop 7...for coverage? If so, how much coverage do you get for 1? Thanks! Mark Range depends on so many factors but one router I installed for a friend is covering a 3,000 sq ft house. In another situation, I'm using three RTN66U to cover an entire acre with full throughput. One router is obviously providing firewall, DHCP and wifi security and the other two (connected via ethernet in conduit under the ground) are in Access Point mode. They live in an area without cell phone coverage so I knew a blanket of wifi would be convenient for wifi calling (T-Mobile/Google Hangouts, etc).

The data in tests I am seeing show that the ASUS is rocking in speed over long distances and in practical/real world situations.
Looks like I will be trying out an ASUS...can't be worse than the old Netgear I am running. For now, most of my stuff won't take advantage of the ac wireless, but my n performance should be a lot better. And, it looks like the 87u is the same as the 87r geebo has...the "r" being a best buy specific SKU.
I'll watch on line for best price today and pull the trigger!

Your just trying to get me to spend even more, aren't you!
I looked into Netgear's tri-band and they didn't appear to execute well...the 2.4 band didn't do well. I will read up on Asus's. If I am going to upgrade, why not the latest? And Amazon's price of $240 is not bad for the 3200.

LOL! Like Sherriff Bart said in Blazing Saddles, "3 bands is my limit baby...I'm not from Havana!". Oh wait, he was referring to Schnitzengruben...right?
Patiently awaiting to see if any good sales come up in the next 24 hours...leaning to the 3200 at present with the 87u/r as my backup.

Just noticed...I can get the 3200 for just $190 right now thanks to a rebate. Ummmm...may have to pull the trigger...
Update...rebate info on Amazon appears wrong...looks like a $20 rebate, not $50. Still, at $220, not bad...

I have been using a Netgear R6700 for some time now, couple/few years, works great. Has 24 & 5 bands. USB & gighrz connectivity. Love the Genie app as well. Not the newest on the market, came out at $200.00 USD AND IS NOW ABOUT $120..
I think its a great value and covers 5 acres. I get better reception at my neighbors then he does from his in his driveway.
Good luck with your search.

I pulled the trigger on the ASUS RT-AC3200. Got it for $240, less an immediate reduction of $11.94 for Amazon Reward points, another $8 added back to our reward points, and at least $20 in rebate from ASUS...and maybe another $30. The paperwork is confusing, so I hope I get the $30 more, but if not...I am happy so far.
We have at least 4 devices which will use the AC band, at least 4 that will use the N, and if I do have some glitchy ports on my current router...that issue will be solved.
Looking forward to hooking it up!

Loop 7 and geebo Thanks for the ASUS info...I will look into it, but I had such a HORRIBLE experience with ASUS just trying to get a $20 rebate on a monitor that I cannot imagine giving them a penny. They had me so pissed off that I didn't care about getting my $20 rebate...it became about me winning over their ridiculous rebate system. Have you had to use their customer service/tech support? If so,how did it go. Mark I've not used their humane based customer support in any way. Their documentation has become quite good and even some videos support setup. You ask a good question because it may come down to a person's comfort level and experiencer with networking. Apple's networking gear and their configuration tools have become simple and foolproof to an unprecedented level. Even as a bit of an Apple fan boy, I just grew tired of the pricing. For example, the RTN66U (discontinued) was available for a little over $100 and performed at the level of an Airport Extreme costing 2-3x. I also like the flexibility built into ASUS devices. Using one as a wireless router and then connecting another one (set to access point mode) via ethernet to another part of the house creates incredible coverage. ASUS RTN66UThe RTN66U has been replaced by the RTAC66UAbout a year ago I purchased (new) the Asus RT-N66U. I am very happy with it because, even though its transfer speed at 2.4GHz is not the best there is, its long range and reliable stability is indispensable for me because I just cannot tolerate any dropouts when listening through my AK240 with MQS Streaming. I also am the happy owner of an Asus (R510L) notebook PC.

Geez I may have to sell my Carport Express and grab an Asus router, especially now that I am streaming Tidal to my Note 4 and then to my Oppo, has anyone gone from an Apple Airport Express to something like the Asus, I wonder if the coverage would be better, I have a small house but my detached garage is about 30ft from the house so would be nice to have some better coverage outside the house for streaming and such $200 Canadian for the AC1750 at Bestbuy.caChad

I have a current model AirPort Extreme (tower version) in my home office (eastern end of the house) with a very short cat 5 connection to my cable modem. With 802.11ac wifi (130'ish Mbps) that services the home office, family room, kitchen, verandah and garage, gotta have wifi in the garage. Daisy chained to that, located in the lounge room (western end of the house) I have an older model AirPort Extreme (flat version) which serves the lounge, dining and bedrooms (50'ish Mbps). There's a family network and guest network, with different passwords. I run the Airport App on my phone and iPad which allows me to control the Extremes, see who's on line, check traffic etc.
Cheers Gary
