garbulky, I really did know you would love those amps, they really do reveal more with an abundance of power, mind you Ive never heard any gen of the Emotiva XPA-1 s. Im basing my thoughts from the Emo amps Ive owned and enjoyed.
I really enjoyed your thoughts, of course I read every word of your essay!! I really wish you could articulate a comparison of the XPR-1s auditioned in your familiar surroundings and gear. What a great story you could tell.
Im not sure if your a believer in amps aging like wine, improving with some age,,,,,,ie; break in!!! But I do think MONOBLOCKS do without exception, at leaste the ones Ive owned. Looking forward to your next edition, after you've toyed with speaker placement etc,,,,etc,,,,,,
I do need to read it again to really sink in,,,,,,,or just to enjoy each word, Im not sure which,,,,,he,,,,,he,,,,,,he,,,,,,,,
More later,,,,,thanks so much

novisnick: Thank you for reading my friend! I am glad you are enjoying it. I think right now with part 2 is I have a lot of listening notes. I feel like people might zone out with such a huge amount of songs. I want to provide detail but also not do it in such a way that's just overload. As for the XPR-1s, the trouble is the speakers are different. And the room is a bit more close range. And the XMC-1 sounds different from the DC-1 and the Oppo 105. So it's very hard to draw a comparison. Due to placement the sound was super wide which was nice. I would say the XPR-1 sounded somewhat similar to my memories of the XPR-2. The sound was slightly softer in treble. I remember there being a lot of punchiness in the sound. Also the tweeter on the paradigms had lower distortion than my axioms. The voices were right in the center too. It seemed nicely placed for live rock concert movies like what you showed us. I still can't compare the two though! Too different. hehe. Hope that helped.

I think you missed my point, i am stating that the only way a true comparison could be made is in your room with your gear!, All the same but the amps. There is NO other way. You know every little thing about your room and gear, but not with the R series. I think that the R series would extenuate your findings. This can only be confirmed by putting them in your room. Wish I was generous and crazy enough to bring them to you but im sure you understand my sentiment about not wanting to move them, even though id love that comparison.

In regards to the XPA-1 versus XPA-1L comparison, I made the XPA-1L choice based on the numbers in my room and then first hand experience with servicing 4 for a local Emotiva customer. I typically listen at around 90 db, which after allowing 3 db for 2 speakers, 2 metres listening distance and around 3 db of room gain means my amps are running at less than 1 watt per channel. Note that I also have a separate sub woofer, so only LF and RF are powered using the XPA-1L's. Using my trusty SPL meter there are peaks of 106 to 110 db maximum, which needs around 32 watts. Whch means the XPA-1L's would mostly be operating in Class A (unless I flick the switch the Class AB of course). Personally I find peaks over 116 db to be uncomfortable, that's 128 watts.
With the above in mind it wasn't all that difficult to conclude that XPA-1's would be an overkill and that XPA-1L's had more than more than enough headroom. The other factors, monoblock ability for close location to each speaker, quad differential, balanced circuitry etc were common between the choices.
Cheers Gary

I've had a pair of the XPA-1 Gen2's for about six months now. I am looking at my options to unload them. I am not as impressed as the rest of the community with these. They just cannot deliver the higher current, low impedance drive capability I need. I sent them to a repair center to be checked out, later finding out nothing is wrong with them. I also have a XPA2 Gen 1 which I think is a much better amp. I would take two of these in mono over the XPA-1's any day. IMO. And how much would you want for your XPA-1?

Hey garbulky, just out of curiosity, are you gonna keep your old "warhorse" aka UPA-2, or are you gonna sell it to fund your next upgrade?

Hey garbulky, just out of curiosity, are you gonna keep your old "warhorse" aka UPA-2, or are you gonna sell it to fund your next upgrade? That's a good question dally. I was thinking of selling it. But then I thought...where the heck else am I going to find such a solid amp at the price? So for now I'm keeping it unless it really does become useless. I already have too much stuff!

Yeah it's nice to have a spare. Also if you decide to build a theater you already have your surrounds covered.

Garbulky, you should write a Book on your journeys in Audio and maybe collaborate with Boom. You guys have been doing it here for years now. There is bound to be many a Audio Gear Head out there that would love to read and know about the things you write here.

I'm honestly just an amateur who is passionate about sound. Most of my exposure to Emotiva gear is through B'zilla!

Joanne Kathleen Rowling was a School Teacher riding on a train when she began to imagine Harry Potter. How many people do you see not just here but anywhere writing to the length and depth about Audio gear and not just some technical mumbo jumbo. You and Boom write to entertain. I am not talking speed writing to get your next post up, were talking years endeavor if you want and not just about Emotiva gear. Now days you can publish your own book on the internet.

I was reading about the XLR outputs on the Marantz 8802, and they say they use the European method (GND, HOT, COLD) as opposed to the European method (GND, COLD, HOT). Does anyone know what method the XPA-1 uses for its XLR input? In short, would it be necessary to modify the XLR cables to link the XPA-1 to the Marantz? Thank you. Anyone? Anyone?

I had hoped the guy who did this wonderful and thorough review might know since he pretty much covered everything the XPA-1 can do, hence my posting it here. I'll create a new thread, though. Thanks.

Is that in a different time zone from NC?

garbulky I really enjoyed reading you the long version, you dress this critical writing including a very personal feeling and a human sense to your thoughts, Bravo . Like you when I buyed my XPA-1s gen 1 back in Dec. 2011 it represent a huge investment for me but 4 years later I had never regret my purchase, I'm still enjoying every seconds I listening them. Enjoy your new toys.
