I wanted to wait a couple of days to say anything but am I the only one who thought the new Star Wars was pretty awful.... As a long time fan of the series and an avid reader of the extended universe, I was really let down. Disney could have done something special with Lucas's life work but decided to butcher 30 years of great story telling and wonderful characters to give some hot shot director free rein. I hope they make millions and break all kinds of records..... but at the cost of many a fans.

I give it a 6/10.
Kylo Ren is the most Nickelodeon, lucius Malfroy, backstreet boy, excuse for a sith in the making ever. He really let me down. His voice in the mask was killing me. Then even worse with it off.
I personally found it entertaining but it missed the mark for me.
I felt it was the least "Star Wars" Star Wars movie I have seen. Made the prequels look like champion status movies.
For reference. I love the original series, and liked the prequels. They had their flaws, but all in all I found them more enjoyable than the force awakens.

I did not think it sucked. I thought it was 3 out of 4 stars. They used the old characters so they could start over basically & come out with a new one every other year

The critics liked it. Rotten Tomatoes and Roger Ebert both gave 4.5 stars out of 5.
You should have set up a poll.

I gave it a 2 out of 5. Really disliked it.
Poor script. Zero pacing. Poor continuity & editing. Almost no character development.

So far it has garnered great reviews. I will see it tomorrow night. Just finished watching Episode VI on Blu-Ray. I'll report back.

I liked the movie for what it is - its space opera, pretty much like I expected. These movies are just for fun.
My favorite character was Maz Kanata, the woman who owned the bar on the lush green planet.
The plot was a bit of a retread in my opinion - Death Star was just bigger this time around.

Well, I went with an open mind and a will to be entertained. Was not too disappointed. I'd rate it a 3/5. The plot was rather weak though as I didn't find continuity. Using the old cast, Disney could've done a lot better than getting caught between a relaunch of the series/homage to the old series and a sequel. In the end, they accomplished neither very well IMHO.
The 12-channel audio and IMAX made it an engaging experience but rather akin to peeling raw potatoes with my bare hands (i.e. I couldn't believe I started it and once started I couldn't stop as I wanted to finish it).

I loved the movie and so did my son, I really can't see why people who claim to like star wars would dislike the movie and its seems for the sake of just not liking something. I mean compare the force awakens to the original star wars or empire and its right there, those movies were not even close to perfect movies but we love them anyways and its because we had an opened mind when we went to watch them.

Tony - I really wanted to love it. A lot.
Perhaps one of my "issues" was that I saw it late on Friday afternoon with a huge theater that was only 10% full (people do have to work and go to school), so there was zero audience feedback.
I wonder if I had attended the subsequent showing, which had lines out the door and was a sellout, if my reaction would've been any different.
As an example of lack of character development: Why was the Rey character living on that scavenger planet selling scrap and obviously living in poverty? How did Finn know so much about the new death star, especially since he had been assigned as a sanitation worker?
As to pacing: The first 1/3 of the movie was pretty slowly paced, but the last 1/10 of the movie seemed very rushed - almost like they realized they needed to fit it into a unspecified duration.

Loved it. Kinda wish they never made 1-3 after seeing this. Acting and direction in those was woeful

Now I was unimpressed with the sound
But I sat in the middle of an upper balcony and wonder if the center speakers were set for the bottom floor only

^ LOL I thought about that too. You know... the force is one hell of a drug lol.
I thought the move was great, fit right in with the original 3 in my opinion.
Odd Star Wars fans (not) would not enjoy the movie.
When Han and Chewy showed up we darn near teared up. Freaking Awesome Movie
The sound I thought was lacking, that I was disappointed in. Once I realized the audio wasn't blowing me away it allowed me to focus on the movie.

I haven't seen the movie. I don't know when I will but I feel like a lot of people in this thread couldn't wait to tear this movie down. I also find it funny how the original 3 movies still get hyped so much. People nostalgia way too hard over this series.

Well, I haven't seen it yet, but I suppose I'll have to eventually Bummer.... I was hoping that, just maybe, it was actually good.... (I'll have to admit that, as I often find to be the case, none of the sequels has impressed me as much as the original.) Apparently it WAS a big hit with the target audience (and it DID break all box-office records for sales, sales on the first weekend, sales on the first day, and probably popcorn consumption, etc). Therefore it is being put down as a major victory for marketing, sales, "social media promotion", and all that muck. (I know that I've been seeing all sorts of TV commercial tie-ins and promotions - up to and including Verizon helping Chewbacca with his data bandwidth woes.... )
