Coz it was a ten dangit! It was a 30 year sigh of relief. Something like that deserves a ten! Versus the prequels where there was a lot riding on it and it couldn't deliver the hype. They had a lot to lose on this gamble. And they stuck it right imo in terms of tone, the feel, the sense of wonder. Close encounters was a seven imo. Though I like pretty much all of Spielbergs other stuff. So because they didn't screw it up, and it literally directly imitates the originals, which in turn gives you a big warm and fuzzy feeling inside, that's a reason to give it a 10? As reboots go, I'd give JJ's own 2 new Star Treks movies higher accolades than this one. Super 8 was better too. All JMO of course. As I've said, I liked this movie, but I didn't love it. It's in 7th place, even behind the prequels. They were far from perfect, but at least they had somewhat original stories. I actually found it quite original with the feel of the originals. For instance ***SPOILER ALERT powerful force user Rey. Han going after his son. Kylo Ren. Storm trooper plots! Storm trooper with light saber! FLAME TROOPER! Better bad guy expose. Black people - yes there were two this time! Granted the second person's screen time was slightly less than one second in the x wing. But...progress! Slightly better humor. Lots of millenium falcon. Less brother sister kissing. What;s not to love?

There was ZERO imagination or originality in this new movie for me, and my wife for that matter. She's a huge Sci-Fi and Star Wars fan, and while I'd rank this a 6.5, she isn't giving it any more than a 5. We both feel it's modern day society showing itself with people totally accepting and even embracing mediocrity. But that's another topic for another thread.

Well I won't grudge your opinion of course. Different strokes. That's what makes movies fun imo

Well I won't grudge your opinion of course. Different strokes. That's what makes movies fun imo +1. And please don't think my wife and I are always in sync. She loves the old comedy "Bringing Up Baby" and totally digs the entire "Twilight" series, and I can't stand either. I much prefer "Some Like It Hot" and "Underworld". Although my wife likes those a lot too. Now if I could just get her to like Caddyshack I'd be okay.

There are so many factors that can go into what any one person thinks about a movie. Nobody's opinion is wrong. You may disagree, but the other person is not wrong. I finally saw it this weekend. I hesitated to go because a coworker found the script online and "ruined" the entire plot. Yet, on Sunday afternoon in NYC I found myself paying a few cents shy of $25 to see it in Imax 3D. (That $25 is the ticket alone, no food/beverage etc..) Even growing up with the original trilogy (Han always has and always will have "shot first") I enjoyed the hell out of the movie. It wasn't perfect, not by a long shot. I'd give it about an 8.4. Not good enough to round up to a 9 but still pretty darn good. Yes, there were more than a few instances that really made me scratch my head. And absolutely, the story is nearly identical in many ways to the original but I'm honestly okay with that.
The original trilogy are some of my favorite movies and they always will be but I acknowledge the fact that I watch them today through rose colored glasses. I'm 37 and my girlfriend is 35. We have extremely similar tastes in movies, though she may be more obsessed with bad horror movies than even I am. Anyhow, she somehow managed to get through life with never seeing any of the movies. A few months ago we watched the original Star Wars. She didn't like it at all. In my very unscientific study I have discovered she isn't the only one. Generally speaking, you need to watch the (original) movies as a child in order to fully capture their wonder. If you see them for the first time as an adult, you're going to realize, they're not actually very good. The effects are dated (no one's fault here) and a lot of the acting and dialogue (let's be honest) isn't very good.
Rehashing the plot in The Force Awakens brings the story full circle and updates it for a new generation. I mean that for both children and adults that never saw the originals. It also shows the republic/rebellion is still struggling and facing the same challenges they had 40 years ago. It isn't a perfect galaxy.. yet. Some of it is a little heavy handed, to be sure but this is (unfortunately) Disney's property now.
Without going into details/spoilers, there might be other reasons for some of the similarities between the movies. Perhaps reasons that may get explained in the later movies? Example why someone was somewhere at the beginning of the movie?
Honestly, my biggest issue with the movie is that Disney, in order to tell the story they told, decided to throw out the last 40 years of novels & other media that were approved and considered Star Wars canon. At least with Star Trek the new movies are an alternate time line so everything published previously can still be considered canon. No so with Star Wars. There were some truly fantastic stories told over the years that easily surpassed the movies. All gone now...
I'd definitely rate it higher than the prequels. Perhaps tied with Return of the Jedi (or surpassing it if you are counting the updated version with the "new" Anakin ghost at the end)
Everyone is free to agree or disagree with me. My opinion is still just as valid as anyone else's.

Finally watched this the other night and I would say if this was some garden variety scifi flick I would say it was pretty good. But if you consider the brand, legacy and ridiculous hoopla surrounding this movie I would say it was mediocre at best.

The movie to me was a clear rip off of star wars #1 wrote to create a much longer chain of prequals instead of a quality script , imo the entire star wars prequals get worse with each new prequal , seeing a 70 yr old luke skywalker & princess was too much for me , whats next " Rambo 12 , the POW yrs " lol .

I disagree about the aging of the characters. I think that was appropriate. What I feel was a shortcoming is that it felt so episodic, almost like everything was just to set up the next movie. Literally the ending seemed like it could have been the pause before intermission or a commercial break on television. Definitely not a stand alone tour de force. But still a good show.
Han Solo was so old. His ears and nose are huge. Reminded me of my Dad (and sadly, now myself)

Hans Solo was old but nothing like Clint Eastwood in Bridges of Madison County when his face looked like a model of the canals on Mars, especially when he was standing in the rain and the water running down his face had multiple paths to take.

Rogue One should add a nice spin to the whole franchise (this one's been beaten to death)

I cannot rate it since I was finding it hard to stay awake at the theater and it was not b/c of a poor sound system. It seemed more like a kids movie...still...it has not matured.

Relevant to this forum: Am I the only one who hates how this movie sounds? I've heard the digital copy (Vudu HDX) and Bluray on 3 different surround sound systems and the sound, especially out of the center, is quite harsh and Kylo Ren sounds awful. (I get that the Ren voice effect is intended but what I've heard from the home copies is not what I remember in the theater.). Most of the characters sound like they are coming from a megaphone! (That may be a slight exaggeration.)

Older Boston 3 channel center (forgot the model) is awful, Martin Logan Motion series center also distorted, Martion Logan Stage is better but has some harshness - and the ML Stage is a center that is very smooth audio wise.
My biggest issue is the sound is so harsh as to call attention to itself plus I, and others I have listened with, have trouble picking up some of the lines.

Whew! I just saw the blu ray. So a tip with the sound. It needs some serious cranking. It's designed to hurt your ears on the loud scenes! But crank it high enough and the dialogue is fine. I can certainly see where a lot of speakers would have real problems with it. The XPA-1s were going past 1/2 way ti 2/3rds on their meters on average during action scenes. And I have 4 ohm speakers and the meters are calibrated for 8 ohms so it was probably giving out more than it was showing. So yeah...the speakers need to have some gumption to take it. I was a little worried as I watched this in IMAX 3d and it apperas that my local theater got a bit of an upgrade in both sound a flawless looking screen. The Blu-ray still retains the fnatastic dynamics of the IMAX though in two channel you do a miss a bit of the envloping of IMAX. But the XPA-1's were no slouch. Te meters were seriously jumping in my small living room. I had the volume at 19 on the DC-1 and stuff in my room was rattling. But the Axiom's did not give out. The story still retained the same magic in Blu-Ray and knowing some of the plot points you could see some of the foreshadowing and appreciate some of the comedy a bit better. The interesting thing about this movie is I felt like I remembered ALL the scenes. They were all unique in their look and memorable. THere wasn't a single scene I had forgotten. This was rare for me. For instance I barely remember anything about the prequels. Just bits like Obi Wan on a lizard, General Grevious, little Anakin on a pod. Etc. But not a whole lot. I think it was a testament to the director who made every scene in this memorable. Well done JJ Abrams!

My wife would say I was squeeling with joy What I really liked was Rey and Finn. When Finn picked up the lightsaber both times he got his butt kicked. Just as you would expect! Also whenever stuff happened on screen Rey reacted realistically. Like she was terrified most of the time during any action just like I would have been. The only weak part of the story was the darth planet imo. Oh and this guy x wing pilot! Sadly Han Solo is gone and I thought he was quite good in the new movie.
