Haha I like how you made a comment of it turning to a Windows suck thread, then proceeded to say that Windows 8 is a POS. Made me laugh. Some great advice here. I have had this happen to me before, and after a few weeks of not using the 'bad' drive, it would end up working and showing up on my device list. Of course, BACK IT UP NOW as others had said, now that you have the opportunity. Might want to try uninstalling the drivers for the external drive and reinstalling for further troubleshooting. Good luck. I know how painful it is to lose data so I you are able to make a back up! I guess you are right! Windows hasn't been without its low points: Window ME, Windows Vista and Windows 8. My issue with 8 was not functional, rather it was MS trying to force us into a 24" cell phone interface!

There are a few things in Win 10 that I find baffling. Cortana for one. I checked all the boxes that informed the operating system that I did not want Cortana - I have no use for it. Apparently MS doesn't care what I think of their Cortana - it was still running in the background - using 25mb of memory while doing it - and using up to 2% of my available bandwidth at times. WTH? Come to find out Cortana is still 'getting to know' me even after I turned all those switches to 'off'! I managed to stop it from running - I killed it in Task Manager then quickly renamed the containing folder in the system files. No more Cortana - the resource hogging program that many of us will never use is 'dead' on my machine. It won't get resurrected by me. I have no use for a program that is there to (as MS puts it) 'getting to know you'. Does Cortana share some of that info with MS? I would be surprised if it doesn't.
