Hi, I'm trying to size a HVAC mini-split for my home theater room. Does anybody have numbers of how much heat the XPR-5 puts out at idle? I've got a stack of three for my active speakers. -Dave

I'll need to know the following: - How many square feet is the room
- What are the sizes and exposures of the walls (N/S/E/W)
- Is it underground at all?
- What state / country are you in?
- How many seats?
- What kind of lighting and how many lights?
- Specs on the HT equipment and display
- Misc. equipment, such as mini fridge, popcorn machine, etc.

My HVAC system performs exactly the same way now as it did after adding an XPR-5 and 2-XPR-1's. The heat warmth is insignificant. I do not believe it's factor, at least not at my house.

Room is 21x19x10 feet 6" walls, E wall has window, N wall sliding door, S wall no windows, W wall joined to garage Above ground, over crawl space, attic above (R-38) California, SF Bay Area 4 seats LED recessed lighting (8) Some of it is TBD, Currently 60" plasma, 3 XPR-5's put out the most heat. Will add a 4K Projector next year to replace plasma. no misc equipment. Thanks Give me all the numbers you came up with on sizing your system. I've been giving my XPR-1's a workout for hours and they are barely warm to the touch. I don't think it's a concern at all IMHO.

I have an XPR-2 and XPR-5 wall mounted in a rack that is in a 5' x 6' closet. I have zero heat issues as well, only slightly warmer in the closet than the outside room. I snapped the picture before I put the XPR-2 in the rack but you get the idea.

You would have an even better contrast and less reflection from the screen. You must have a brutal sound in that room...

Thank you, I agree with you 100% but my wife thinks we are both wrong so guess who won that battle?
I had a buddy over last night, we moved the sub around and tweaked it, now the room sounds absolutely awesome. I am very happy with the results.

Isn't it a dedicated HT room?

Not enough heat to worry about. Less than the heat of a light bulb

I have 2 XPR-5s. I forget exactly, I thought it was something like 65-85W. Not much. Edit, found it:
XPR-5 FAQ
"How much power does it use while powered on and idle (no signal)? Based on my personal measurements, between 65 and 85 watts.
How warm is it while sitting powered on and idle? Based on my personal measurements, the top of the case measures 10-15 degrees warmer than ambient - barely warm to the touch."

Yes it is a dedicated HT but she will stop by now and then to watch a movie or some hockey so I gave her a win.

Not enough to have anything to do with your hvac system... IMHO But he might have lots of equipment and wants to calculate the total heat generated, some people like to get things right.

I have those amps and they make no real heat at all.. At lease mine don't.. That's not possible, it may not be significant in your opinion, but if it's consuming power it's generating heat. Some amps have a BTU rating at idle, these don't that I know of.

Not at my house anyway. They never get any more than just warm and in my opinion the heat they generate is not enough to base an HVAC system. This is my experience with my 3 XPR amps. I'm sorry you don't agree but I'm not making it up.

I did the calc real quick and it looks like you need about 0.75 tons of cooling. This would be a 9,000 BTUh mini-split system (like a Mr. Slim unit). Personally, I'd probably bump that up to a ton, just in case, which is 12,000 BTUh. I factored in 1000W for your AV equipment, which is probably about right. Basically, in the electronic world, 1 watt of power consumed by a device = 1 watt of heat produced. I have 2 amps, a receiver, plasma TV, HTPC, set top box, and router plugged into a power center. It has never drawn more than 6 amps, which is 720 watts. But he might have lots of equipment and wants to calculate the total heat generated, some people like to get things right. Well that was not his question. I have those amps and they make no real heat at all.. At lease mine don't.. They run noticeably warmer than the three XPA-5's they replaced. When stacked together with a 3" gap between them the top unit was much warmer than the bottom. So I staggered them. The HVAC contractor is recommending a 12,000 BTU unit. If each XPR-5 puts out 85 watts then that converts to 3x85=255 watts =~ 870 BTU. Add to this a projector, 4 pieces of equipment for the digital cross-overs, pre-pro, 4 subs, PC, and blu-ray player. It adds up. I'm thinking I should estimate 1500-2000 BTU for the equipment.
