PS: Too many set the crossover to the sub too low. Using the -3dB point of the mains is usually too low, especially for the L&R. Most brands exaggerate the low end of their speakers. S&V tested the RTi-A9's –3dB point at 49 Hz. Polk shows -3dB's at 30Hz which might be possible in some rooms. A good rough guideline is to set the crossover at about 20Hz or slightly more above the -3dBpoint. For the RTi-A9's this would be about 70Hz. You don't mention what sub you have? It needs to be very good and would be stronger from 70Hz and lower than the RTi-A9. Don't forget to bypass/turn off the crossover on the sub. Thanks Chuckienut... I actually don't know what my sub is... it's a Paradigm, but it's a prototype, with no model number. I can't find it anywhere on the 'net. I will take some pictures of the back to see if we can determine what it is, but it's similar to the Paradigm PS-1000, except it has only 2 ports, and absolutely no visible drivers! Not even a downward facing one. It's bizarre. Here's a picture of the back: I did find one like it on CanuckAudioMart www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/648982128-used_paradigm_psseries_powered_subwoofer/ which looks the same, two ports, one on the top and one in the middle, but no lower port. Its a hybrid, like the new prototype cars,,,, No driver,,,,,,,,,,,just riders!!,,,,he,,,,he,,,,,he,,,,,,,

What does setting to small vs large do? The links above explain, but basically any speakers that are set to "small" will have the bass below the crossover frequency diverted to the subwoofer output. Any speaker set to "large" will get a full range signal. Then why does my denon have large option with all the same crossover options

Even when set to large there is no full range option. The lowest crossover is 40hz

When its large it's automatically full range. Any speaker set to small is cut off at the crossover point.

Jamie, you have what is called a bandpass sub. There is a woofer/driver inside but it is back slightly from the front of the enclosure and actually fires inside the enclosure and then back thru the two ports on the rear of your sub. See drawing. below. Paradigm seemed to use this design from a few years back, maybe even 10 years or more. They apparently used it in more than one model, PS-1200 and PS-1000 and some had two ports and some three ports. The ones with the extra RCA line outs which you don't need seem to be the V3 or V4 model. Looks like yours without model or serial number might be a prototype/beta test version. Do you have any documentation/owner's manual for it, that might show the outside dimensions and weight (or measure it yourself)..... that would allow us to determine which model it is 10" or 12" driver? You could also call Paradigm with questions. The enclosure size should tell you by checking the specs sheets, see below whether it is the PS-1000 or PS-1200 series (and series 3 or 4). www.jlaudio.com/header/Support/Tutorials/Bandpass+Enclosure+Characteristics/Tutorial%3A+Bandpass+Enclosure+Characteristics/287538www.paradigm.com/products-hidden/series=subwoofer-leg/type=subwoofer/model=ps1000v3-leg/page=specswww.paradigm.com/products-hidden/series=subwoofer-leg/type=subwoofer/model=ps1000v4-leg/page=specswww.paradigm.com/products-hidden/series=subwoofer-leg/type=subwoofer/model=ps1200v3-leg/page=specswww.paradigm.com/products-hidden/series=subwoofer-leg/type=subwoofer/model=ps1200v4-leg/page=specsNo offense intended here at all. Paradigm makes some excellent subs. My guess/observation is that what you have is several steps above their entry level sub. For Paradigm that is good news. This model depending on driver size (12" more output and deeper than the 10") should be able to put out pretty loud bass and quite good for movies. On the other hand I would guess it tends to be somewhat boomy or "one note" response depending on its location in your room. That might make it not quite so ideal for music. Most of my comments are from info I read online on these subs. I would hook it up correctly, to the mono in and the frequency dial on the back to max. See what you think and move it if you can to an alternative listen location to compare. In the future I would consider upgrading to a sub from the online direct brands I recommend ..... HSU, Power Sound Audio, SVS, Ryhtmik and Outlaw Audio (see my posts over the last month or so for specific models). www.paradigm.com/products-hidden/series=subwoofer-leg/type=subwoofer (check for specs)

Even when set to large there is no full range option. The lowest crossover is 40hz And remember, it's still a crossover, not a brick wall, and since most non-LFE content isn't going to go below 30hz anyway, 40hz is practically the same as Large. And yes, all the latest science and research says to always set to small w/ a crossover when your using adequate Sub(s), there's one thing to remember overall. It's Your Room, and you're listening to it, if YOU think it sounds better set a certain way....That's the right way.
