I presently have a single sub, Epik Legend, never venturing into dual subs. I would like to venture that way.
I am thinking sealed as I would like small units. Def Tech Supercubes, be it the 4000 or 6000, definitely fits the bill. They ought to be decent subs, but they seem to get mixed reviews. I am presently researching SVS SB-1000 and SB-2000.
How do the Def Techs stack up against the SVS and former generation Emotiva subs. I understand Emotiva is coming out with 2 new units that appear to directly compare in price with both of the SVS units at $499 and $699. Are these sealed or ported units? Any comparisions between Def tech, SVS, and what is of the old Emotiva units and expected of the new upcoming Airmotives is well appreciated. I am not particularly concerned with how my Legend compares as two of any of the new units will outperform the Legend and with the exception of not knowing the dimensions of the Airmotives be a hell of a lot smaller.

Just curious, ever thought of going DIY for subs? And how small is small?

I will dare to expeculate that previous emo subs lacked what other subs have and in that price range they just couldn't compete successfully.

DYI... no. I have read about them but not something I am really interested in doing. I could certainly do it and I think it would be fun, though.
How small is small? Ideally not much larger than 14 inches square, which both the Supercube 6000 and SVS SB-2000 and 1000 fit. My current Legend is roughly 22 deep, 15 wide, and 18 tall. For size reference, the Legend is too large for my taste. If the new Airmotives are the size of the Legend, then I am not interested regardless of how good they might be. I want smaller plus two of them.
I chatted with a Crutchfield advisor this afternoon and was told the Def Tech over the SVS.

Why not try to SVS, and if you don't like it, send it back? They'll pay the shipping back to them, if you decide it isn't for you.

Personally, I love SVS and Powersound audio subs, but that is just me... I have a couple of Emo subs which are decent, but not up to the standard of the SVS or the PSAudio units I have (I hope no-one is contemplating taking my noggin off for admitting that on this lounge). I haven't tried the others you have mentioned. I can only say that I do not see how you could possibly go wrong, were you to choose a sealed unit from SVS or Powersound audio.

I hadn't noticed SVS does free return shipping. I was just using Crutchfield's product selection as a basis. I have in the past looked at SVS directly, though, and was surprised to see Crutch sold them. I had forgot about SVS.

I'd go SVS, but ya, I'm kinda biased.
They give a discount if you buy 2 or more.

Due to the smaller size subs you're looking at, is it safe to assume you're putting them into a small room as well? Not sure how much space you need to pressurize.

Thats the interesting thing. They are going into a room 15x42 with an adjoining room 20x20. I realize that this room will not be pressurized. Standard 8 foot high ceilings, drop with standard acoustic ceiling tile.

I use 2 supercube IIIs in a fair sized space (previous gen, preDSP, model replaced I think by the 4000). They have a great bass slam, are quick enough to keep up with ML electrostatics and are just plain fun to listen to. However, what they don't do is play really low bass. (Take that low end number with a grain of salt.) I assume the 4000 with a slightly larger woofer is better than the IIIs but I think if you want lower bass you might want to think about at least the next size up.
I also helped a friend set up a fairly small room with 2 SVS SB12s in December after the BF close out deal. (I think they were replaced by the SB-1000s). I was very impressed by the subs, not quite the slam of the DT IIIs but seemed to play lower (though hard to be sure) and really pressurized the small space. With SVS allowing one to try in their space I would second the recommendation to try them.

Hmm, that's a ton of space for 2 small subs. I would look at SVS as they offer free shipping both ways and then see if the output from the smaller subs suit your needs. Personally, I would go with multiple larger subs to pressurize the space properly. My room is roughly 18 x 17 x 8; however, I have an open floor plan so I need to move a ton of air. I just built an 18" sealed sub (20w x 23.5h x 20.d) and looking to build another one.

With SVS its a toss up for me as to who to purchase them from. They charge sales tax to MI, but with the discount on purchasing multiples, that discount is absorbed by the sales tax which I wouldn't have to pay if I got them from Crutchfield. I like the return shipping and the bill of rights. I just got done looking through it. I was leaning toward SuperCube 6000 if Def Tech and the SB 2000 if SVS. Sounds as if they are the two models to compare each other to, or if smaller, the SuperCube 4000 and the SB 1000.

Thank you all for commenting. I still need to think it over but your suggestions have helped me a lot. I considered SVS when I got my Epik and obviously made the wrong choice given how Epik crashed and burned.

I see you talked with a Crutchfield advisor. Did you also call and talk to someone at SVS? Extremely knowledgeable and I'd bet they know their products better than Crutchfield. They gave me good advise and didn't try to upsell me either, though I did that on my own!

My SVS SB13 Ultra is a monster when it comes to life during a movie or can be subtle and blend in perfect with music. I was a little disappointed at first but once you get it in the perfect spot and levels set it is amazing! I would always recommend SVS after using their product!

I didn't contact SVS, yet. I will place them both side by side under my television between the fronts left and right. The more I hear and read about SVS the more impressed I am, plus the comparable Def Tech model is twice the cost of one SVS unit.

The more I hear and read about SVS the more impressed I am, plus the comparable Def Tech model is twice the cost of one SVS unit. I wouldn't just place them between the front speakers and hope it all works out great. Take your current sub and do the "sub crawl" to see where the true best placement for your sub is. You might be amazed what you have been missing.
