My new XPA-1s give off a smell when in use and when idling. It isn't smoke - just a smell like warm electronics - but it is noticeable.
The smell is making my wife's throat sore, and we're having to ventilate the house to dispel the smell.
How long will this last?
Is it toxic?
What causes the smell?

I know it will, Bill - but you've only answered one of the three questions (and only if you're right). Here's the other two again:
How long will it last?
Is it toxic?
Again - note that this is making my wife's throat sore (although I can smell it strongly, it isn't bothering me as much) and that we're ventilating the whole house to disperse the smell.

Enough - I'm turning the amps off. The wife's health is more important. Keith L - would you please comment? If this continues, I may have to send the amps back. No other Emotiva component I've ever bought has done this.

No other Emotiva component I've ever bought has done this. They are OBVIOUSLY too dangerous to operate. Please send them to me for PROPER handling and disposal.

I'm NOT kidding, Loungers - these things are fragrant!
I've emailed Emotiva customer support directly & am awaiting their response.

Hi.... absolutely no cause for alarm. What you are smelling is the anodize coating on the aluminum parts (mostly the heat sinks and face plate) "settling in"...... It is NOT TOXIC, and will go away pretty soon. The exact amount of smell you get will depend on several things, like when the aluminum was treated, how long the amps were stored, and the current temperature and humidity. However, it is "safe" by all current health and environmental standards. The smell should gradually dissipate in, at the most, a few weeks. You will probably find that the smell is stronger when you run the amp in Class A mode (because the heat sinks run hotter), so you can minimize it by running them in Class A/B until the smell is entirely gone. As with most odors, some people are more sensitive to it than others... and, obviously, you should do what you feel you need to do in order to keep your family safe and happy. However, just to reassure you, it is perfectly normal, and perfectly safe. My new XPA-1s give off a smell when in use and when idling. Thank you kindly, Keith! That's exactly what I wanted to know. We'll follow that advice & run the amps in AB mode until everything is on longer odoriferous. Now back to listening!

So in my experience yes there is a smell. But it goes away in one to one and a half days of class A operation. With the strongest only being hte first few hours.

Maybe send your wife to a resort/Spa for a few days. You burn in the amps, she gets pampered for a few days.
It's a win/win except for the bank account.
Oh and if you decide to sell that CJ at half its value I may have to go into debt and try it.

Cooking & ventilating today. If it doesn't smell better by this weekend, I'm moving both the amps out to the garage & I'll let them cook until they're well done. But one last question - if I DO move them to the garage for seasoning, the ambient temperature will be 100F and with at least 50% humidity. I'm assuming that the amps won't be bothered by these ambient conditions?

Place a bag of potpourri on the unit. At least you won't have the acrid smell...

We may be over the hump here - Returning to the living room after lunch out at a restaurant, my smarter half declared that she could no longer smell the amps. Now that's with them both in class AB, but I can leave them there for a while, if that's what it takes to avoid odor complaints.
Cheers!

Perhaps one of these? LOL Make sure it is intrinsically safe if you are going to use it in a hazardous explosive environment.
