Yes, what is good about 8 is better with 10 ... ^This I agree with.. ...what sucks with Win8 still sucks with Win10 ^But this I don't. Win 10 has many improvements over Win 8 (which frankly was a disaster) but Win 10 is faster and has more security (but one must take the time to understand and configure as needed),

It just pisses me off that they can't design it with continuity from OS to OS. WTH do the icons have to change, why do some things get moved to a different location. I DO like the search function in Win10. I DO NOT like it when I end up on a screen with like just an envelope and there is no apparent way to step back.

The only answer I have to your question is: " So they can "fix" all that in Windows 12?"

With Classic Shell installed on it, differences between it and Windows 7 were mostly irrelevant IMO, with only some minor annoyances that were still relatively easy to fix.

I'm talking about the masses not us Windows geeks that can make pretty much anything work. Heck, I still regularly use MSDOS batch files and the command prompt! But I do not represent the masses.

Today, Windows XP is incredibly dangerous to use if you're on a network. It hasn't been patched for over 2 years, and the attackers know how to exploit it. I am using Windows Vista on my tower computer. I use separate antivirus and antispyware programs from different companies - so the Windows Defender antivirus is disabled since only one antivirus program should be used at a time. If I am being protected from viruses, spyware and being hacked, what exactly was Windows support protecting me from? Windows Vista has become inconvenient when using Google Chrome because they add pop up windows now and no longer save the preferences for Windows Vista and XP users. Other than that, Vista fits my needs perfectly. Another consideration is that a Windows 7, 8.0 or 8.1 license is required to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. This is a link on operating system use. It shows Windows 10 has 19% of the market while Windows 7 has 49% market share and Windows 8.1 - 8% and Windows 8 - 2%. If Windows 10 is so great, whey does Microsoft have such difficulty giving it away for free?www.netmarketshare.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=10&qpcustomd=0&qpcustomb=That being said, I will attempt to upgrade my laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 10 since they will charge $119.00 after July 29th to upgrade - and they plan to stop supporting Windows 7 in 2020 (and Windows 8.1 in 2023). Walt Your question is one of the best I've seen posed here! Long time Windows users have little trust in a company that is 'giving' software away simply because they've been hosed too many times by MS. I was one of the first Win 95 users - I bought a new 486 with 32mb of memory and a 1.2gb hard drive for about $1900 in 95. Coming from DOS it was a nice change. Trouble is 95 was a DOS shell with many bugs that lots of people simply referred to as 'features'. Configuring a sound or video card could be a real PITA. Printers that worked yesterday suddenly couldn't be found in the device manager. A mouse could become reluctant to work - same for the keyboard. Anyway - the reason MS is 'giving' you the Win 10 OS has to do with money - lots of it - we are talking MS after all! Just like your iphones and tablets your computer will require apps to do simple things that once came with the OS. I found out that freecell was no longer part of Win 10. My 21,000+ games played with 5 losses was gone - vanished when I reverted back to Win 7 - it was not restored. There were other things missing as well. I had to reinstall some of the programs (apps?) where important DLL files had vanished. A great program for those of you using FireFox in a windows setting and thinking of upgrading to a new computer should look at MosBackup. It is free and saves all of your settings like bookmarks passwords history etc to a file that can be loaded into a new computer & FireFox install. It'll make you think you are still using your old computer - makes you feel like you never left home. Too bad it doesn't run on Linux - maybe someone will write that some day. Going from FireFox on Win 7 to Ubuntu was a bit of a pain but I finally found a program that downloaded all the user files to a comma separated file that FireFox was able to recognize and stuck it in the right place. FireFox under Ubuntu/Linux is EXACTLY like the Windows version.

I'm in the process of upgrading a family member's old laptop. It was using Vista OS and I had to upgrade it to Win 7 (using a spare install disc that I had) and then to Win 10 because MS doesn't offer free upgrade from Vista to Win 10. The only problem so far is that Intel hasn't released a graphics driver for the old hardware that works with Win 10. I haven't given up, but Gar is right, the drivers are a pain. Chuck Which model is the Intel video card in the laptop? Also make sure the laptop is running the most current bios firmware. Some of the older laptops require a bios update to work correctly with the newer operating systems. I haven't checked the BIOS, but suspect there is an update available. This is an old Gateway laptop with integrated Intel graphics reported as: Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.1)

The only answer I have to your question is: " So they can "fix" all that in Windows 12?" From what I've read Win 10 is the last OS MS will build. Everything you need later down the road you'll get in the form of an 'app'. May as well get used to it - nothing is really free - the upgrade to Win 10 only seems free. You and I and all the others that bought Win 95 - 98 - 98SE etc paid for the Win 10 years ago. When I went looking for my favorite game under Win 7 - freecell - it was nowhere to be found on Win 10. When I did a search for Win 10 freecell I found it - at a cost of $9.95! That is the future of computers if MS has their way. Linux has always been free - the Ubuntu folks do ask for a donation of $15 - I gave them $50. Its been well worth it so far. I don't expect that to change. Anyone that has a spare hard drive sitting around should just try it. I bet they'll be very pleasantly surprised. The download is free - the donation is optional. All my hardware was found without me having to search for any drivers - FireFox is pre-loaded - it just takes some time to figure out how to get your info from the old computer to the new one. Ubuntu has a forum that is full of how-to information. I found it very helpful.

A month ago while I was out of town, the devious folks at MS snuck a "forced" update from 7 to 10 in with a bunch of updates for 7. When I tried to restore my PC back to 7 it failed. I spent many hours over a long weekend with tech support "wannabees" from MS who were only able to send me a copy of 7 and I had to figure out how to reinstall it myself. Rather pathetic effort on their part. I recently saw where MS paid a woman in California $10,000 for doing the same thing to her PC which ran her home business.

I've heard stories like this, but I have another Windows 7 laptop that I've successfully avoided upgrading for almost a year. Certainly MS has tried to get me to update, but I've been able to just say no. While Microsoft can be devious in places like the express settings, and they've really pushed this upgrade, I still think people allow the upgrade to happen by not fully reading the messages before clicking OK. That said, I plan to take the time to upgrade this laptop before the deadline, and will even turn on some older boxes sitting around to see if they qualify for the upgrade. Another thing nice about the Win 10 upgrade is that once you've upgraded and activated your machine, you can wipe it and do a clean install of 10 again without having any license keys, your hardware becomes authorized permanently. I like clean installs and do them with all my OS X and Windows machines. The downside of this 'feature' is that you can't take this copy of Windows 10 and move it to another machine, but that's what you get with free.

I find W10 and W8 to be far more stable than all prior Windows. I have 10 on 3 computers and no BSOD's...ever.
