Off. It may not have mattered on the final 1 on 1 test between the 4308 vs the 3808 + XPA-2, but it would have mattered greatly on the way to that test as each receiver used different devices (Denon uses Audyssey, Ya,maha uses YPAO, and Pioneer uses MCACC) to get to the "same" place. It was decided it would be better to leave all off and let the units "fight" the room on equal footing. It was concluded that to do otherwise would be a test of the room calibration abilities of each unit. I will readily admit that the decision left some unanswered questions, but I do not believe those questions were the ones to which we were seeking answers.
Just out of curiosity I might return and test the units without the XPA. I have a good relationship with the shop (I have done business with them for years). Unfortunately, such a test won't answer my need for a pre/pro.. For my pre/pro, this store doesn't handle Onkyo or Emotiva:-), the Denon piece is way to expensive, and I don't believe the others make one.

Another way to get what you want is to use a Musical Fidelity Tube buffer to give the tube personality but still have the control that Solid State gives. I use in my case a vacuum tubed preamplifier ahead of the XPA-2 with great effect. Gives me all I could want. Ultimately what it sounds like to you and where is takes you is what it is all about. That's what makes this trip called audio so fun.
