I've been reading about the impending 1x1 upgrade and the 4x2 upgrade coming later on. Does anyone know if the larger board will cost more, whether it can be user installed and estimated release time? I've been searching for 2 days and can't find definite answers. If one still has a 1080p display will that work with the new boards? Obviously I wouldn't be using 4K content with that display but I'm anticipating a display upgrade within the next 12 months. I don't have an XMC-1 but am strongly considering getting one (I already have an XPA-5 and love it). Knowing these details will help me make an informed decision.
Regarding the new codecs and the required hardware installation, have any renders of how the back will be laid out been released? I'm strongly leaning towards the 4x2 board and will definitely get the Atmos/DTS:X upgrade if I get the XMC-1. The idea is I could order a refurb XMC-1 now or buy a 40% of card and buy it for $3k minus 40% q1 of next year.
Lastly, and I know this is the wrong forum, but I'll ask anyways. I'm thinking of picking up a BasX A-700 to fill out the other 6 channels (beyond my gen1 XPA-5 amp). Speakers will be 3 high sensitivity DIYSG LCRs (98-99dB) and Volt-10lx (95dB) for everything else. Do you guys think the A-700 will work well in tandem with my gen1 amp or I keep looking for two gen1 XPA-3 amps?
Thanks!

My guess - not user installed. The best match would be gen 1 XPA-3 amps but I think your Bas-x will be just fine. The XPA-3 gen 1s are 32 db gain whil the bas-x is I think 29 db gain. On high efficincy speakers this may be more noticeable but the xmc-1 can compensate for gain.

Does that mean the LCRs would be 10dB louder than the surround/Atmos speakers (3dB difference in gain + 3dB difference in sensitivity + 2.5x the wattage) before the XMC-1 adjustment is made? That's a significant difference.

That's a significant difference. The gain and sensitivity would impact how loud a speaker plays at a selected volume level. The wattage should (in theory) only impact how loud you can go without clipping. I know a lot of people say go with as much wattage as you can and I agree to some extent. That said, if these are for the ancillary/"effect" speakers I'd go with the A-700 amp and let the XMC level match everything. It would save a TON of space and also save your back when trying to move one 29.4lbs amp (A-700) rather than two 57.5lbs amps (XPA-3) Cheaper too.

I called and spoke with somebody there. Very nice . The refurbed XMC-1's are sold out. The 4x2 HDMI board is in development and he couldn't or wouldn't reveal more other than to imply it will likely be HDMI 2.0b 🖒 and that if released it will be in 2017 whereas the 1x1 board will be released soon and be HDMI2.0a.

The most recent podcast has some updates on the HDMI 2.0 board. However, no firm release date was set (IIRC). The beta testers were able to install themselves according to the ones that I talked to (I'm not a beta tester; don't have a 4k screen). I thought it was said that the HDMI board updates were capable of being user installed (they previously said it had to be sent in) but they prefer you to let them do it.

I believe the HDMI board was always user installable, it's the Atmos board that you have to send in for.

However, they reconsidered and have said that they would allow users to self-install but that they still prefer for users to send in the units (they take the responsibility rather than the user to install it correctly and without damage). The ATMOS board is a definite return to Emotiva for updates.

What I thought we were referring to was the updated board for those of us who have had our XMC-1s prior to next week or those considering buying a refurbished unit (sold out) or a used unit.

That's interesting because Emo have so far said the 1x1 board will only be HDMI 2.0 but with HDCP 2.2. Are you sure the person you spoke to said 2.0a?

Just to clarify things here. All the amps are 29db of gain so you can mix and match as you please. Lonnie

Full clarification..... The "current" HDMI update board, which will be available as an upgrade in a few weeks, and which will be included in all new units shipping from now on, has one input and one output which support HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. This fulfills all the requirements for 4k, including the copy protection, WHICH MEANS THAT THIS BOARD WILL PASS ALL "STANDARD 4k SOURCES" (it will pass the signal from 4k satellite and cable boxes, and from 4k disc players). This board is at the top of the unit, and requires you to remove and replace quite a few screws, and several cables - but doesn't require any soldering. While we PREFER to do the installation here, we will probably allow people to do it themselves if they really want to. This board will NOT support HDR10 (which is part of HDMI 2.0a), and probably won't work with the 4k version of Dolby Vision HDR. There will be ANOTHER HDMI board upgrade around year end 2016 that will upgrade multiple inputs and outputs (probably all of them) to HDMI 2.0a. This future board will support HDMI 2.0a (and, of course, HDCP 2.2), and WILL support HDR10 (HDR10 is part of HDMI 2.0a) and Dolby Vision at 4k. (It may also support HDMI 2.0b - but I'm not prepared to even discuss that yet .)
