We've also developed our own up-mixer that sounds very good. It'll take any format from stereo on up and turn it into a very sweet sound field using all available speakers. That's interesting, but could it mean that they're not including the Dolby Atmos Upmixer? (which could presumably have a separate license cost?) I've heard good things about the Dolby Upmixer, so why would they develop their own? Seems either quality (they think they can make it better), or price (they think they can make it cheaper).

I have to think it's a cost issue.

Is it true most of these upmixers just create a generic reverb effect? I remember when Audussey DSX claimed theirs was able to create phantom room reflections that could be manipulated into sounding like a larger room or smaller. I figured this meant theirs somehow recognized reflections or echoes in the original sound and recreated the time delay on their height speakers. I don't know if this is even possible but how else could they have manipulated the perceived room size if they actually did?

I would say no, Dolby PLIIx, which is what I use most, surely doesn't sound like reverb (at least not what an old surf guitarist would call reverb ) Delay, may be at the heart of it, but it doesn't sound like those synthetic room simulations – auditorium, club, stadium, etc – which do sound reverby (sorry bonzo). I wouldn't think the goal is to simulate different rooms, but rather take whatever mix is available and expand it to fill the additional speakers. That said I don't know what the algorithms are.

While I would be happy to help in any way I could, I'm personally not a great candidate for a BETA Tester since my setup is so simple with only a single HDMI source (Oppo UDP-203) and a single sink (Pioneer KRP-600M) and a simple 5.1 audio system. (It's arguable that the RMC-1 is complete overkill for my needs.) Good candidates for BETA Testers would have lots of HDMI Sources/Sinks and complex audio setups. Me, I'll just cheer from the sides and offer to serve beer. Casey Someone has to test a 5.1 system with a single source and sink. How would it be if Dirac refused to work on 5.1 or the AVP actually needed 2 HDMI ports populated before it passed video. These would be silly bugs but you'd be surprised how many silly bugs there are in our modern world.

So over at AVS there's another sentence after the upmixer announcement, it says: "It'll be selectable along with all the other post processors from Dolby, DTS, Auro." To me this implies that the Dolby Upmixer (and others) will also be included.

We're also developing our own cool up-mixer. The RMC-1 team have been busy boys. We'll need to come up with a name for the up-mixer... Hopefully something more imaginative than Emo-Logic... or E-logix, or E-allround... Ideas?? Cheers, Big Dan

Since it is about "Immersion" and immersive sound, why don´t you give it an emo-twist and call it "E-mersion" or something like that? "Emursion" from jcz06 was close but I don´t like the "u".

Not a chance of that thankfully as Dan said Dan always refers to the upmixers as post processors as its the correct terminology This is something that the RMC1 has in common with the XMC1 iirc ; the 2nd dsp chipset does the dsp mode additions to the 1st chips object [ and auro etc ] decoding Its great that theres an extra dsp mode hopefully one applied more to music than movies like the other upmixers .. As Roger posted www.avsforum.com/forum/90-receivers-amps-processors/1706505-official-dolby-surround-upmixing-thread.html#post29407210If Emo could coin/licence another famous dsp mode name from HK and lexicon I think Logic 16 sounds nice - if its a logic steering algorithm used ? Considering DSU and NEURAL -X are replacing a whole raft of dsp modes like pl2z/x neo6 etc this extra one is more like a flagship deserves. Dan was too quick ..

Siege, Blitzkrieg or another military term for all out assault of one's senses. I don't think it has to have Emotiva in it for the sake that might be cheesy but out of what I heard Emursion or the like sound the best to me. Maybe Emosphere or emocentric. A scientific term zero-point, collider, orb, Envelop, Cloak.. I'd include fusion but that was already in a product line. I dunno. Tough

It'll leave me explaining to my friends, that just like Emofest, it has nothing to do with the 'emo' scene. Man, this upmix mode is so...dark...

Wow, lots of good names already. Hard to beat some of those.
Using one of my favorite The Who songs as inspiration:
Eminence
Even the actual meanings sort of fit the bill.
[em-uh-nuh ns]
noun 1. high station, rank, or repute: philosophers of eminence.
2. a high place or part; a hill or elevation; height.
3. (initial capital letter) Roman Catholic Church. a title of honor, applied to cardinals (usually preceded by His or Your).
4. Anatomy. an elevation or projection, especially on a bone.
Or change it slightly to Emonence.
