With so many ways to get at internet content these days including your smart tv, Apple TV, roku, not having apps in this player doesn't bother me. I actually prefer the separate box as I find these to be updated more often and more encompassing than the built in apps on tv or player.
To me, this is not a big deal.

I am in no hurry for the latest tech (don't have PJ that supports it anyway). Not having apps is a bummer because I use them on my 105 a fair amount and I have no other source for them in that system. Hopefully by the time I need 4k/hdr/etc, Oppo has a model with that stuff and apps. I almost thought of selling my 105 and buying a 203, but lack of apps means no...

If you're looking for something to run apps I'm a huge fan of the Nvidia Shield TV. Powerful as hell, supports lossless audio (which is rare), and even supports 4k HDR with HDMI 2.0a even though it's a year old. I can control it with my Logitech Harmony or bluetooth controller. It's one of the best consumer devices released in the last year or so, imo. Nvidia has provided amazing support. I run a Plex server on it.

Lack of app support in the new Oppo, Im spoiled! Period! And I know it! I run Tidal with the app in my Oppo 103 and control it with my IPad, easy peasy! Its up and running in seconds. Im not interested in changing this setup.

Interesting that you all rely on your blu-ray player to handle such duties. I haven't incorporated something like Tidal yet, but I will at some point. I'd like to have all the options and ideas in my brain before diving in.
I get the apps thing on a TV because it's what you are looking at in the system. Although most of those are "visual" sort of apps. I have them on my Panny ZT, but rarely use them. Just like we never use the VOD from DirecTV, rewind shows, or bother to watch shows anywhere (phone / tablet etc). Almost a total waste of functionality to us. For us it doesn't even "compute;" it's totally unnecessary.
But for what you are doing, I would consider the app or Roku stick like daisy chaining components, and I'm not sure I like that idea (still open to, just not sure). Not that it would or wouldn't work, but it would make much more sense to me to have this go straight in a processor. Like, plugging the Roku stick straight in the back of the processor. That way the Roku stick is like a component with it's own input, that you can even name as such (Roku, streaming, etc). Plugging it through the blu-ray player to say, listen to music, will almost certainly cause confusion with other house members or guests. Right in the back of the processor makes way more sense to me.
That being said, for those of you who use such a system, if you have the time, I'd love to hear the pros/cons of what I'm talking about. No opinion is right or wrong here as far as I'm concerned; I'd like to hear about every angle, even technical ones. I can make a new thread if you all deem it worthy.
Thanks ---- Bonzo

With my Oppo 105, it's located in a part of the house that is a little weak on wifi. So, I have the Oppo, the XMC, an HTPC, and the base Sonos unit all hard-wired to my network to ensure the weak wifi does not create streaming issues. And, with the apps built into the Oppo, as soon as I switch to the BluRay input on my XMC-1, the Oppo screen shows all the fun input options - including the apps and the play a disc icon. So, it's very effective and intuitive for all users as we all know (from all our other BluRays around the house) that the apps are "right there". Even my wife can use it w/o issues (this is a woman who refuses to even learn how to think about a folder structure on a computer and how to move or copy files from one folder to another - and she gets pissed EVERY time she does it because "it didn't work right"...meaning...she put the files somewhere and didn't remember where she put them...). Net: advantages are ease of use and working even in weak wifi areas. disadvantage? none that I have found. Mark

Sorry for butting in here but its no solution for those wanting easy Tidal/Ipad use. If you use a computer to play music files you may want to consider using Audirvana software. In my system, all my music downloads and CD rips, as well as Tidal, play through Audirnana via USB to my XMC-1. Sounds great, even provides upsampling of PCM or PCM to DSD (if you also have a DSD DAC) or conversion from DSD to PCM. The Tidal interface in Audirvana is slick and Audirvana will upsample Tidal just like PCM downloads. The sound is superior to the Tidal software through Google Chrome. Audirvana also has an exceptionally nice app for iPad or iPhone to control the system.

I have my Apple TV 4 connected to my XMC-1 and it's simply a matter of selecting that input with the remote and it's onscreen. Very easy.
I still have to turn my bluray player on which is connected to my XMC-1, select the bluray input before it shows up onscreen.
It's all hard-wired via ethernet cable to a switch which is hard-wired to my Verizon FIOS router. No dropouts.

Thanks for the input folks, I'll be keeping my 103 for Tidal's ease of use. JRiver for the same reason. Only screen I need to run either is my Ipad. Weather I want to use SS or tubes and watch a sports event or not at the same time with ease of use has me spoiled!

The Samsung 4K HDR player has the apps so that may be an option for those that want them. It even has an app for Amazon Prime which the Oppo never did. For my Oppo, less is more IMO.

True, tha Samsng does have apps and it is an exceptional value as well. The upscaler is premium as well. Ive had trouble free use since I made this purchase. The remote is rather small but I use my Harmony 650 anyway. That said, most of my digital listening is either Mac min via Jriver via Ipad or Ipad to select Oppo 103 then select Tidal and theres the interface, done! Im listening to music immediately after my selection is made.

Porn ? We didn't even get to see her back side. Lol 😜 Well, there was already one of those on the site already Anyhoo... Quick words on a little testing. Not an ideal environment at my computer desk but I just wanted to run the unit through some paces to see how it worked. I tested three new UHD (with HDR) movies, though my 43" Sony 4K TV-as-PC-monitor is a 2015 model without HDR, and also threw on a regular Blu-ray of Life of Pi. The latter was gorgeous on regular HD TV and it still is. Mind you I'm sitting about 3 feet from the screen, but all of these movies had clear stable images. Obviously the better shot movies will look that way (Life of Pi, Deadpool 4K). Star Trek Beyond 4K and Independence Day Resurgence 4K varied depending on the scenes. I only watched a little bit of each. There was NO glitching whatsoever in operating the BDP-203. In spite of numerous patches to the prior model BDP-103, that one still freezes up now and then. No such thing here. Movie start-up was fairly quick, and hey - no trailers for other movies I ran the 203 direct to the amp (UPA-500) and into the Stealth-6 front speakers, so was using the 203's decoding and speaker level/distance/crossover controls. The UPA-500 is running the center and surrounds and also an older but efficient 10" passive SW on two of the channels. I'm not sure the lack of smart apps (Netflix et. al.) was a good idea, though I suspect that helped keep the price down. I would much rather have the audio/video for such coming from external to the TV so it goes full-bore audio into the surround processor. Otherwise you have to depend on one's TV sending out the audio unchanged (all too often you only get stereo out of the toslink from the TV), or need another external device with the Netflix et. al. apps. so how did the dacs sound using the akm chips. given that its all contained in one box there should be very clean audio. hows the audio?

Given that pretty much 95% of new 4k tvs have built in streaming apps like netflix it has become completely moot at this point and a complete distraction for stand alone players. I use my sonys netflix app anyways.
