Oppo 4K

True, tha Samsng does have apps and it is an exceptional value as well. The upscaler is premium as well. Ive had trouble free use since I made this purchase. The remote is rather small but I use my Harmony 650 anyway.

That said, most of my digital listening is either Mac min via Jriver via Ipad or Ipad to select Oppo 103 then select Tidal and theres the interface, done! Im listening to music immediately after my selection is made.  

But right now there are no other options in a 4K player that is also a renderer to push from jRiver. So it's the K8500 or keep the 103 and be limited to non-4K stuff. Or get a Roku or something similar to plug into the 203. I don't see Oppo changing at this point. Unless they release another model that includes apps which I doubt. But you never know...

I completely agree. The NetFlix app in my BDP-93 hasn't been updated in I don't know how long, and probably still only passes 2ch audio. The Amazon Fire TV apps get updated quite regularly, not to mention the apps seem to be more robust code-wise. This is why the Amazon Fire TV/Apple TV/Roku will always have a place in my streaming world.

I haven't see Tidal as an app on the Roku.
Yes, I'd hate to have to need both units to get what I want but that may be the only solution for me.  

Maybe if enough of us ask for its inclusion in future Oppo players they will offer it,,,,,,,,maybe

I've just sent Oppo an e-mail concerning the lack of apps, more specifically the lack of support for Tidal. Im sure it wont have much if any effect on their plans but at least my voice will be heard!,,,,,,hopefully.

Prior to availability of the 203 I wrote them an email asking if a few features might make it into the 203 - on-the-fly trim controls (at least center), and individual cross-over points for each speaker - with the context being using the 203 by itself as the "pre-pro" in case another wasn't available, in the shop, etc. They wrote back the next day - indicated they would consider the trim controls in their mobile app but probably not the remote, and they would think about the individual cross-over points but wouldn't make it into the product. So, you never know - they are listening!

And... second report on using the 203... Everything is still working flawlessly and quickly. I tried excerpts of a DVD today (Master and Commander), SACD discs (Pink Floyd, DSOTM, and a Saint-Saens Organ Symphony), regular CD, and inserted a thumb-drive into the front MHL slot to search for and play some music. Also, did network search to play some tunes from my main computer. As I said, worked "perfect" every time, and quickly.

I still hate the on-screen alphanumeric keyboard you must use to type stuff like login/passwords for the network access to the computer, but this is quite common . Also not sure about the display of album covers when playing music - I'll have to check further on that.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful reply and update on the new product. Maybe if a bunch of us write to them they may consider adding apps to the 203. Especially the Tidal app, it just works so smoothly with an IPad and my systems.

Update and response from Oppo but first a disclaimer. There was no limited use statement on the reply I recieved so my best guess it that its free to be shared.

I knew they had to have a good reason to not have them. I didn't think they would just pass on them on their own. Good to know the reason.

Exactly.
Someone is wanting to charge too much or wanting to pay too little. And if it means keeping the price a little lower by not including apps I'm all in.

I'll keep my Samsung UHD8500. It even has 4K streaming services. You have to keep up - Oppo isn't!

BUT oppo has the ability to strip UHD...which the sammy cant...

I'll take the Oppo over any of the mainstream brands any day of the week. I've owned several bluray players and even the Sony BDP-S1000ES can't hold a candle to my Oppo 103. Much better build and sound quality. Support is fantastic. Don't even get me started with Sony or Samsung support. Firmware updates are documented.

No comparison.

I had to ditch an Oppo BDP-83 because it would not pass Dolby Atmos and all bluray players were supposed to pass it. I went to a BDP-103,which I still have, but the Samsung downconverted 1080P is better than that Oppo's 1080P. Also I have been enjoying 4K and UHD for almost an entire year now, while Oppo tried to catch up (I think they are strained). Is the 203 even better? I bet it would be tough to tell. I have never had a DVD or Bluray player fail on me. Metal is metal, set the thinner ones on top of the stack instead of on the bottom,and don't open up any of them else warranty is voided. As for sound quality, if you don't use the player's analog outs, there is no difference, period.

I was thinking the same thing.

Since they sell subscriptions, streaming services are going to want their app to be as widely distributed as possible.
(They're happy to give you a copy for free for your computer.)
And, likewise, having apps counts as a selling feature for Oppo.
My guess would be that getting the apps to work on their new platform would require some software customization.
(And either they don't want to do that customization for free, or Oppo just plain missed the deadline to get it done in time for a holiday season product release.)

Since virtually all 4k TVs have their own apps anyway,
I don't see that it matters much.

Huh?

UHD is a designation for 4k video content..... it's not something you cans strip.
If you're referring to the ability to "strip HDCP", then I doubt that the Oppo does that either (the HDMI license forbids it).

HOWEVER,
If you have a device that supports 4k VIDEO, but not HDCP 2.2, and you want to play 4k UHD video through it, you need a device that "converts HDCP 2.2 to HDCP 1.4".
It's not "stripping the copy protection" - it is converting the newer version of the HDCP copy protection to the older one - which all HDMI 1.4b devices already support.
(The original XMC-1 supports 4k/60 video but not HDCP 2.2.)
Until about six months ago, this sort of little black box was generally considered to be illegal, and HDFury was about the only company offering one.
However, due to a recent court decision and settlement, they are now NOT considered to be illegal (Monoprice sells one now for $39).
