What happens when schiit comes out with a new akm 4497 dac for $500? The specs should be better than base gungnir dac are $850. All I can say is that my bifrost 4490 is upgradeable when new DACs come out and the better the signal the better my dac sounds so....I just can't see the Gumby being worth twice as much as the bimby. The multibit dacs might actually become obsolete when the newer akm 4497 DACs become widely available.

EVERYTHING becomes obsolete, amigo, everything... Tubes are obsolete - but I still like them. Sophie Marceau is obsolete, but I still like her. I'm obsolete, but I'm not gone yet!

That wasn't the point I was making. The multibit will still be good for a long time. What I'm saying is maybe six months from now you can get the same level of performance for a lot less. I'm with you on Sophie Marceau....if only there was a time machine....

Same age as me. Time machine for both.

However the whole point of their multibit versus delta sigma dacs is not so much the resoltion or SNR but the way they do things. It has the proprietary Schiit filter which is supposed to be the big selling point. That and it's multibit technology is marketted as being "non-guessing" versus the delta sigma.

A lot of people who have tried the bifrost multibit have said that it's not worth it for $200 more and that the base has been tremendously reduced compared to the 4490 dac. So what it comes down to it is the Gumby worth $1250 vs. the $400 bifrost. I think I'd rather work on the other weaknesses in my audio chain. Another thing is that aren't we limited to less than 20 bit resolution with the multibit? As far as I'm concerned the better the recording the better my 4490 dac sounds. If they make the akm 20% better than what I have for $150 more I think it might be worth it with the newer 4497 dac.

Schiit will probably incorporate the new DAC in to their DS Gungnir. It makes sense. But is the Gumby worth it? Only you would be able to say.

Novice question - does at $2K DAC sound any better than a $500 DAC?

Novice question - does at $2K DAC sound any better than a $500 DAC? Depends. I have heard a 2k DAC that did not. I have a heard a 1k dac that did.

Novice question - does at $2K DAC sound any better than a $500 DAC? The main difference between the $500 dac and $1000+ dac is usually the separation of channels and their own dac chip per channel and separate power supplies etc. Also additional power filtering plus better parts etc. Some dacs even use silver transformers in their design. There are even FPGA dacs like direct stream audio that cost $4000-8000. Personally, as the quality of audio improves I believe that it becomes less important to spend mega bucks to get very good playback. I might even consider the schiit gungnir dac when they come out with a better akm chip exactly for that reason if it's at $850. Right now I'm happy to wait things out and enjoy what I do have with the $400 bifrost. I might even upgrade the bifrost and not even bother with the gungnir if the new dac chip is very good.
