Hello, I am newish to the board and have a question if someone could be so helpful. I have 2 MPS-1's and I have a couple cards that are having problems ( hissing and some light problems). I contacted Emotiva and got an email back stating that amp is over 5 years old so go kick rocks through a cornfield basically, which kind of upset me. So, besides that does anyone know of someone who could look at these 2 cards or maybe a breakdown so I could attempt a repair. And for the record to Emotiva, I would put these "old" amps up against any of your newest XPR line and stomp a mudhole in them. I apologize for the rant, but that really upset me about so sorry about your old amps kinda stuff. Thanks again for any help

When you talked with them did they say they no longer have parts as I would assume they would fix them just not for free as your warranty is over as you said.

They replied that parts are no longer available so no work can be preformed on these amplifiers. If this is truly the case, then at least forward us to some kind of repair center or make your schematics available so we can attempt to fix these ourselves.

And again, I apologize for coming off hot headed about the subject. But I am very partial to my amps and see no reason for them not being able to be repaired? Thanks

I'm sure Emotiva will help in some way or another, I've never owned the MPS-1 but hearing from people that have they are excellent amps, my first power amps were two UPA-1's and I kick myself for not keeping them

I absolutely love them and will never part with them, I hope either way I can at least find someone that can help me fix the two modules. Thanks again,

You might also be able to find a 3rd MPS-1/2 on AudioGon or similar venues and use it for parts.
And if Emotiva does make the schematics available, it would be cool since I love my MPS-1 as well ... :-)
That said, I've never heard a comparison between the MPS-1/2 and the latest XPA Gen3 Amplifiers so I wouldn't be able to offer any commentary on that.

Yeah, I have been looking for the last year through the various sites to pick a spare one up just in case .

I understand your frustration but how long should manufacturer's keep replacement parts for products out of production and warranty? Perhaps some of the components are no longer in production? That is one of the reasons for the design change between the ERC-2 & ERC-3 disc players.
I am sure there are people out there that can examine & repair the modules in your amp but I would never expect Emotiva publish their intellectual property (schematics) online. Even if the amp is out of production they could easily repurpose some of the design for future devices.

You can get schematics for a LOT of amps. I'll bet you'd be surprised. Just for example? Here is link to BRYSTON schematics for some older amps. I didn't bother to see if newer was available. www.bryston.com/PDF/Schematics/3B-8BST_SCHEMATICS.pdfAs for parts? There are basically 2 kinds. Proprietary parts are made ESPECIALLY for a particular company. Circuit boards are one such part. Casework is another part in this category. FEW companies can afford custom transistors or other electronic parts. Commodity parts are available on the open market and are available to ALL. This will be virtually ALL the electronics on-board. Resistors? Capacitors? Transistors? Inductors? Small hardware like fuse clips. That sort of thing. Only a few builders, like maybe PASS, can afford custom or semi-custom semiconductors. Pass has marketed a VFET amp using ancient SONY transistors. www.firstwatt.com/pdf/art_diy_sony_vfet_1st_draft.pdfI SAW this amp at a show but didn't hear it. Demo's were scheduled and only so many persons per demo could be accomodated. CD players might be a special case. Laser diodes only last so long and the transports are NOT commodity parts. Even people with hi-end players can get screwed in only a few years when parts are NOT available and the OEM of the transport (Like SONY, or Hitachi, or Sanyo, or Philips, to name on a few) simple isn't interested in long term support.

So shall we remain "in stand by mode" Mr. Admin.? or because it has been brought to light that plenty of manufacturers supply schematics for out of warranty or obsolete products and Emo choses not too, this thread dies. I believe I helped this little Co. out by spending a far chunk of change on some untested equipment(DCM-1 MPS-1) when they were still my neighbor here in California. I'm not at all complaining I feel I more than got my money's worth, I still use them to this day, with a few externals that I added on waiting for the XMC-1, a HDMI switch that extraps 7.1 LPCM, and a PC to do room correction and crossover. So I have no need or new pieces.

And, I note - you are not even the OP. Do you personally have an issue you need to have resolved? If so...call them...if not, let the OP deal with it. Mark

Actually, Emotiva contacted me and setup for me to send the unit in to get repaired. Just waiting till after the holiday season seeing that most packages like to get thrown and or kicked across the floor . They have been more than professional and helpful with the repair process, thanks again to all

It seemed like you kind of threw support under the bus in the first post... and now they've been more than professional and helpful? Where was the misunderstanding?

Well, that would have came from the first emails I received from Emotiva when I first contacted them about " repairing " my MPS-1. The response was very short and not professional at all. So, did that answer your question?

So what is the summary of the repairabilty/maintainability of the MPS-1? As a current very happy owner I'm curious what my options are if my MPS-1 develops a problem in the future? Should I buy spare EPM-300 Amplifier Modules?

I really do not want to start posting the emails and go into the details. Let us just say the email back was very short and not very helpful. Now, Mr. Laliberte and Mr. Harper have been more than helpful in helping me diagnose what seems to be some needed repairs in the front end of the chassis. I recall him saying some repairs with caps and some retensioning of the contacts. The modules themselves and most of what I am guessing for components are not available anymore. I am considering when I get this sent to them after the holiday shipping nightmare I might be inclined to let them check my other over before anymore certain parts or etc. become unavailable. So, my fellow MPS owners I would keep an eye out for an extra or two just for parts maybe?
