I saw a review on Fox News by Kevin McCarthy this morning and he said half the movie was good, half wasn't and the script was terrible.. His words not mine Does he not know how many rebels died getting those plans from the Deathstar? (Apparently, the plans were stored on an Atari gaming system)

I've heard good reviews about Rogue One, but Rouge One gets smeared a lot. Nice.

Philly.com is a sorry excuse for a newpaper. I wouldn't trust them to rate toilet paper. Trust me I've lived here the majority of my life.

Wonder if the review would be like this: "Charmin releases their new Super Soft, Mega Roll Bath Tissue - minor little, but necessary product with likable comfort and familiar designs. But it tries to hard to be an epic must buy tissue - with self-proclaimed cleaning qualities and insanely outsized mega roll - that ends up on the floor because it cannot fit in the holder."

Manchester by the Sea seems like a better choice this weekend.
Or - better yet - stay in and use my Emotiva equipment. Lord knows it sounds better than the local movie houses!

Ok, saw it yesterday (Friday). If you're a Star Wars fan, it is a must see. It's now a required fixture of the Star Wars cannon.
Interestingly, most of my favorite clips from the previews were not in the movie. Pity.
The movie starts out slow as it has to establish a whole new set of characters. It's not until we get well into the story that some of our old favorites start showing up. I really like Felicity Jones. Unfortunately, she's no where near as enamoring in this movie as she has been in some of her others. which is kind of the rule for this movie. It has an important story to tell, and they tell it very competently. Special effects are impressive, though none seemed to be awe inspiring. The acting is very good, but we still don't really identify with any character.
I do wish that they had spent more time with the CG in the very last scene. Unless the character was suppose to look like he/she (no spoilers here) was lifted out of the Clone War movie.
And I still don't know what a Bothans is.

I was a bit ho hum about seeing it but my daughter and future son in law went to see it on opening night (morning) at 12.02 am and were both happy to see it again. They thought it was better than Episode 7, no plot giveaways but my daughter (who BTW has a Masters Degree in Applied Theatre) was especially complimentary on the superior acting of the experienced lead in Felicity Jones. Her comment "better than the Star Wars history of just choosing some new face".
Their screening was in 3D, but unlike E7, didn't think it was a must see. It still has the 3D depth of field blurring, that annoys the hell out of me. Which, as usual, means the space scenes are the best to watch in 3D, where the blurring of the blackness of space isn't an issue. They made no comment on the CG, which usually means it's OK, doesn't overpower the story line, but not terrible either.
I'll probably still wait for the BD release but, as a result of their reviews, I might actually make the effort to go to a movie theatre.
Cheers Gary

Yes, I saw it in 3D too, and wish that I hadn't. As much fun as 3D can be, I find it to be more gimmicky than effective. The background blurring you mentions really bothers me too. From now on, for this movie, I think that 2D is best.

+1 on 3d. I saw the previous Star Wars in IMAX 3D and hated it. Bought the BluRay (2D) and loved it.

I've heard good reviews about Rogue One, but Rouge One gets smeared a lot. It just occurred to me... isn't the title Rogue One, not "Rouge One"? ROGUE -- A dishonest, knavish person; scoundrel. A playfully mischievous person; scamp. A tramp or vagabond. ROUGE -- Any of various red cosmetics for coloring the cheeks or lips. A reddish powder, chiefly ferric oxide, used for polishing metal, glass, etc. Canadian football. Where in the world did Canadian football fit in??!!

Just got done watching it in 3d. Surprisingly - and I'm a HUGE 3d proponent - this movie isn't really a 3d demo. Some of the space scenes and scenes in the air were nice in 3d due to their "bigness" but when they filmed it, they didn't really do it with 3d in mind. So if you watched it in 2d, you didn't miss a ton. Anyway, the movie. The first half was "okay". Still better than episodes 1, 2, and 3 put together. But still "okay." No glaring mis-steps, but it was simply building things up. The second half was tons of fun! And it just kept ramping up. And the very end bits was just pure fan boy gold. So it was a success imo and we were left grinning at the end. Special note: the special effects were really good. Especially the space fight scenes. Unlike episode 3 which had epic space battles which looked cgi, this one had epic space battles that looked like episode 4, 5, and 6. But of course more epic. As in they looked like real models rather than cgi models. Not sure how they pulled it off, but I think they outdid episode 7 in space special effects. The space ships, though simple looking had that memorable iconic look. Like the new tie fighter and the transport ships. Darth Vader: BOY I WISH WE HAD MORE OF HIM. But he was satisfying and delivered a choking good line. I wasn't let down, if that's what you are thinking. But there wasn't much of him at all. Another note: the fate of the characters. This was surprisingly the darkest star wars I have seen....by a long long ways. I read a review that said they had to lighten the tone and I thought....this was the light version?! Lol. Story line: Props for being bold on the darkness and taking a different tone and pacing. But it's not really a memorable story - not that any of the movies were story telling masterpieces, really. Think of it as Star Wars Noir. The asian connection: Recently the blockbusters have been including asian storylines for help with the international market much to the amusement of the asian market who find it a little out of place or "shoved in there". Think Transformers 4 Age of Extinction here. Here "Ip man Jedi man" and his bro didn't feel out of place and fit in reasonably well with the storyline. It didn't feel shoved in is what I am trying to say. Anyway, it's definitely worth seeing in theaters. Not the pure fan boy delight of episode 7 but not far behind. 8 to 8.5 out of 10.

This is starting to sound like a game of roulette. First it was Star Wars Rouge One, now is it Star Wars Noir One??? '-)
