Hey All,
I have the opportunity to buy a used XMC-1. The unit was never actually used or opened, but it was purchased in December 2014. I have a few questions:
1) The Dirac LE license was never used or activated. If the owner passes on this info to me, can I use it to set up an account, or is that key locked to him personally?
2a) If I can't use the Dirac LE license, is the fix to buy the $100 Dirac Full license from the Emotiva site? 2b) Can I purchase the Dirac Full upgrade at any time to upgrade the XMC's Dirac Software?
3) This XMC-1 obviously comes with the older HDMI board. The current upgrade board available on the site seems to only have 1 HDMI input that supports commercial 4k. I think I've heard that there's another board that will be coming out that supports commercial 4k on all HDMI inputs? Is this correct? Are we also to assume that it will be a $350 upgrade as well?
4) Other than the upcoming Atomos changes, do we know of any planned upgrades or changes to the XMC platform hardware that would affect features or sound quality on new units in 2017?
5) The ultimate question: If I purchase this used XMC-1, and I'm ready to pay for ugpgrades along the way, can I end up with an XMC-1 that had Dirac Full and commercial 4k on all (or most of) the inputs?
Thanks!

The Dirac Le will work for you as long it has never been registered to the previous owners email address or installed on his laptop. You are correct about the current HDMI board ,the new board coming in 2017 will have 2.0b hdcp 2.2 and I believe 3 inputs at that spec. With all upgrades you will have ATMOS and DTSX and will be essentially the same as the XMC-2 which I believe has more balanced outputs. Its still going to be a while before the Atmos upgrade is available plus I believe you will have to return it to Emotiva for the upgrade, unless its a good deal you may want to wait and see what the final price is. Only Emotiva can answer #1-4. Only you can answer #5.

1) The Dirac LE license was never used or activated. If the owner passes on this info to me, can I use it to set up an account, or is that key locked to him personally? If the current owner never licensed it then you can register Dirac LE.2a) If I can't use the Dirac LE license, is the fix to buy the $100 Dirac Full license from the Emotiva site? 2b) Can I purchase the Dirac Full upgrade at any time to upgrade the XMC's Dirac Software? Dirac Full is available to all XMC owners whether or not you are the original owner or if LE was ever registered.3) This XMC-1 obviously comes with the older HDMI board. The current upgrade board available on the site seems to only have 1 HDMI input that supports commercial 4k. I think I've heard that there's another board that will be coming out that supports commercial 4k on all HDMI inputs? Is this correct? Are we also to assume that it will be a $350 upgrade as well? The new board is supposed to be available soon and will have eight inputs and two outputs that are HDCP 2.2 and HDMI 2.0a compliant. I don't believe pricing has been announced just yet. 4) Other than the upcoming Atomos changes, do we know of any planned upgrades or changes to the XMC latform hardware that would affect features or sound quality on new units in 2017? None that I'm aware of.5) The ultimate question: If I purchase this used XMC-1, and I'm ready to pay for ugpgrades along the way, can I end up with an XMC-1 that had Dirac Full and commercial 4k on all (or most of) the inputs? Yes

Just a little more info I dug up for curiosity sake
OK, OK...
Let me make this clear...
The XMC-1 will upgrade to 7.2.4, but it will re-purpose some of the RCA outputs to achieve this functionality. We've discussed this before. That's why it remains the G2 XMC-1. We'll continue to enhance and support this platform for the long run. Dirac Live will be implemented on all new outputs. But even with the upgrades, it will always be G2.
The NEW XMC-2 G3 will have ALL balanced outputs. Full Dirac Live will operate at 96K on this model and it will be standard with purchase. Unlike the XMC-1 which has the L & R channels "fully balanced", the XMC-2 will have L,R,& C "fully balanced" This is what we refer to as "Differential Reference". In Differential Reference mode, there is no single ended to balanced conversion. It's FULLY DIFFERENTIAL from input to output. Including volume controls, DAC's, everything!
The RMC-1 G3 wil have Full Dirac Live on all outputs and it will most likely operate at 192k. We're checking MIP's requirements at the moment, but we should be OK. Again, it will be standard with purchase. And all 16 outputs will operate in Differential Reference mode with the finest components available.
OK?
Cheers, Big Dan

Cheers, Big Dan What is the difference between "Full Dirac Live," ("standard with purchase" for XMC-2 G3 and the RMC-1, as described by Dan in this passage), and the "Dirac Full" or the "Dirac Live Full" that we currently purchase for $99, that is if there is any difference at all? Put in a different way, will the "Full Dirac Live" on the XMC-2 G3 and the RMC-1 already include the extra features of the "Dirac Full" we currently purchase for $99, or is "Dirac Full" going to remain an optional extra purchase? I'm just seeking a clarification of a certain ambiguity in Dan's language in the above post.

There should be no difference what so ever. He types faster than his brain can keep up with . With the XMC-2 they will include full Dirac instead of the hobbled version that came with the XMC-1. They will just price the new XMC-2 accordingly, ie $99 added to the price. The XMC-1 will never be up to the same specs as the XMC-2 hence the XMC-2 will command a higher price, somewhere between the XMC-1 and the RMC-1.

Just a few notes from the last podcast jcisbig ; the new hdmi board is now described as hdmi2.0b which will be handy for HDR variable metadata of whatever flavour ? and hybrid log gamma if this happens for broadcast FTA HDR ? Also mentioned in the podcast for the xmc1 upgrade are "top secret cant talk about trade embargo chips'' that will drive the atmos dts-x processing presumably. CES is coming soon last I looked

Make sure you view an original purchase receipt and/ or contact Emotiva with a serial number to check the ownership record.
