There are four steps that could be happening with MQA. 1. First unfold like the one happening in Tidal desktop app. 2. Second unfold, which can bring it all up to 384 kHz 3. Acknowledging it’s authenticated MQA 4. Forcing the DAC to choose an MQA filter. In theory, the first three could easily be done in software. However, it seems like MQA for one or the other reason doesnt allow step 2 & 3 in software. Interestingly enough, the MQA filter is measur quite bad. At least if you look at Stereophile’s measurements from for instance Mytek Manhattan II. Where the other filters from the same DAC measures really well. And the world was flat once, its a new approach and most likely wont be accepted untill the old thinkers all die off! Guess whom Im quoting now. 😁 FTR, I have a Manhattan II and as for the measuerements, they are what they are and it doesn't necessarily mean that MQA sounds bad.

I read a lot of the cons of MQA but I don't see much about how it sounds.

I read a lot of the cons of MQA but I don't see much about how it sounds. Actually, there's a lot of people vouching for MQA. Personally, I prefer Dirac correction over the slight improvement I hear (whether imagined or not) with MQA. Haven't spent enough time listening with headphones (obviously no Dirac then) to justify a statement for or against MQA.

I see Stereophile and the Absolute sound liking it. But little Emo users reporting other than novisnick of course.

I've also tried briefly with a Tidal Desktop and a Audioquest Dragonfly Black, which was not that impressive at all.

I, like Nick, enjoy mqa masters streamed through the tidal desktop app. MacBook Pro to oppo dac via USB. I am not in a hurry to try (pay for) an mqa enabled dac. Soundwise, I am all in. Just as I like sacd (DSD), DVD -audio, and the lossless blur Ray formats (Dolby true & DTS-master, etc.) Definetly worth a listen.

You can test drive the Meridian Explorer 2 for 60 days for only $200.00, well worth a spin around the clock,,,,,,pun intended. 😁

I am enjoying these tidal master releases so much I am considering buying a Mac laptop or Mac mini for streaming tidal to oppo dac. I now have to borrow my wife's laptop. I have been waiting for these to be available through iPad app, tired of waiting and maybe I need the direct USB hookup anyway. The app is much better also. I am not real concerned about a mqa enabled dac at this time as I am usually not an early adopter. Any suggestions?

As to your mini........which model? Memory? And storage do u suggest? And....what dac were you using before you purchased the meridian explorer 2?

My Mac mini may be a 2012 full of memory but im not absolutely sure. Don't really need much to stream, as long as it has The latest software you should be good. My other DAC is a DC-1 which I think is one of the best on the market for sound and versatility. It and the Explorer 2 sound almost indistinguishable. Thats a great thig in my book. My storage for my terabyte of music is a WD My Book 4 T with a second one for backup. The software between Jrivers and Tidal want and need exclusive use, so just don't run them both at the same time. Sorry if this is more then you wanted but I figured others may be reading with interest as well. Im here if you have anymore questions my friend.

Thanks Nick. I like the ess DAC's in my 105, so in no hurry there. I will think about options. From what I understand, the 105 sounds better then the 205. I haven't found the 105 to be unpleasant as some EES DACs can be.
