I decided to forgo watching it in theaters and opted to pay for the 3d Blu ray disc.
What a great choice that was. I had already watched it in 2d where I found the quality and resolution of the picture outstanding.
In 3d, it is definitely a demo disc. You could see they really put a lot of effort in to the 3d version. Almost no cross talk, sharp crisp colors, amazing use of depth. Everybody who's watched it remarked on small things that they put an enormous effort on like the Moses parting wave at the beginning of the movie and the coconut tree that Moana sits on before she sings
As for the movie, it ranks right up there with some of the best Disney has ever put out. It is basically a mixture of the little mermaid meets Aladdin in feel. This is not surprising because it was done by the makers of both of those movies!
The emphasis on family, one's history, and heritage really came across well. All the voice actors were polynesian except for the chicken .
The movie takes the mythical feel of the fantastical events and creatures and treats it as if it's real which helps immerse you in the world.
We cried several times in the movie and the songs were quite catchy. My favorite is "We know the way" - a song that's mostly in another language, and "you're welcome". **SPOILER**Of course who could resist when Moana affirms "I AM MOANA!" ***END SPOILER***
A big part of the success was the characters. The Rock wasn't a throwaway gag as the demigod and had real personality. Moana was probably the most bada*$ "princess" Disney has ever had refusing to let anything stop her and pulling some awesome moves.
Go watch it if you haven't already. Both versions are great but the 3d was worth it.
10/10.
