Although I can think of many things that'll make it cost a fortune as a transport...
Some suggestions to improve on the ERC-3:
Give it a modern CD oriented mechanism and controller i.e. sanyo SFP101N-16P.
Lose the cut down DVD drive.
Give it a clock better than 25ppm and put effort into tuning (buffering, precision split resistors) for a clean spdif signal without tricks. No need for expensive fancy/expensive error correction, ram/buffer, digital lensing.

I know this may be heresy, but I'd really like to see a product like the Antipodes DX from Emotiva. With access to HDTracks, the SACD is largely irrelevant now...put in a decent sized hard drive and give me a good CD mechanism to help me rip and digitize my library, do HDMI for surround or DSD output (to the XMC-1!) and USB for PCM stereo (or DSD or MQA, if the XMC-1 can support those, but PCM is equally fine) and you can just take my money, please. You don't even need to develop your own software...make it Roon ready (or just let users use JRiver) and focus on the hardware.
If you want to put a toslink or digital coax on there for digital input, equally fine, but not necessary. The XMC-1 has more than enough inputs for me.

Hate to differ with the OP, but that seems like a problem in search of a solution I was a guy that loved his CD player, but it's a technology that has seen its best days. I'd rather see R&D in DAC technology.

I love CD players. I love spinning those discs. They sound great. Problem is that streaming is more convenient for most folks and it sounds pretty good these days. I've found myself buying very few CD's anymore. I will purchase a favorite group's new music when it comes out.
I also have multiple CD players up and above what's in my signature because I'm a sucker for some of those great players from the 80's - 90's.
Would I buy a new Emotive CD player? Maybe. Depends on whether my ERC-1 tanks or keeps on going.

I don't own a compact disc player and haven't had one in my system for a decade. However, DAC inputs seem to be a successful trend in optical players. Anecdotally, I know one person who sold his DC-1 after purchasing an Oppo BDP-105 which has become his USB DAC. Kind of an elegant solution.

That (95/105/205) is OK as long as you don't mind the Sabre DAC sound that Oppo implementations follow, which personally I do. Using a 103/203 to avoid the Sabre sound results, to my ears anyway, in inferior sound quality to the DAC in the ERC-3. Cheers Gary

Even though I have plenty of streaming options i still prefer putting s disc in the tray. I would definitely be interested in an ERC-4. Maybe they can put the drawer on the left side this time so I don't have to open my audio rack glass doors all the way to insert or remove a disc. I love the Emotiva players and I have owned all three outside of the new BasX player.

Just needs a little freshen up. Add an OLED display to match the higher cost processors. 👍 I also liked the centre mount slot loading disc drive of the erc-1/2. I know the drive part has already been debated, but might be some new improved drive options around now.

I wish I had bought just a good transport instead of a CD player (although the CD-3 can be used as such). What I would like to see from Emotiva is a streamer product.

If you read the Emofest notes and looked at the back photos of units from CES - you might get your wish. The thin client streamer they talked seems very feasible AND versatile. right now, a simple solution for that would be my #1 wish for from Emotiva. Mark

For streaming - it might be cool to see Emotiva "partner-up" with NAD/Bluesound. They could build-in a "slot" that could accept a Bluesound Module: nadelectronics.com/product/mdc-bluos-2/The result could be a "THE Source" (Name already taken by Mugler): SINGLE BOX Solution for: -High-Quality CD Playback -Ability to use as a stand-alone DAC -Ability to ADD Streaming Add Pre-Amp, Amp, and Speakers of your choosing = BANG! Instant system with nice flexibility and minimal shelf-space requirements

I have an Apple TV4K for streaming. Adding streaming to another piece of gear doesn't cut it for me, I like separates to stay separated. For example I don't want to have to buy a new CD/BD player or DAC etc just because the streaming part is out of date technically.
Cheers Gary

Steaming is definitely something a normal CD player does not do. But DAC is (unless its just a transport, not a player). Hence why it makes total sense to copy Oppo and have digital inputs so a person can use the DAC set up inside the player. If Emotiva doesn't add that funtion they are missing the boat.
