Hmmm... "We completely reimagined how a speaker should make music in the home. HomePod combines Apple-engineered audio technology and advanced software to deliver the highest-fidelity sound throughout the room, no matter where it’s placed. This elegantly designed, compact speaker totally rocks the house." (Apple web site)$349 Dimensions: 6.8" x 5.6" HomePod at Apple.com

People are going to buy this because it is made by Apple and they are going to be raving about its sound quality.

Someone could call me an "Apple guy," because of the number of Apple products I own, and the fact that I have a sort of eco system in my homes that is mainly apple-product based (ipads, several macminis serving as htpcs, a Macbook pro, an apple watch etc. etc.). However, I do not see this new speaker replacing any of the components in my home for the sole purpose of playing music. It cannot beat any of my 2-channel/5.1/7.1 channel HT systems for either music or movies, so why in the world should I be concerned with it at all? In order for me to actually consider buying it, it will have to do something really extraordinary which fulfills some need that I currently do not recognize that I have. In case you're wondering, I already have a list of redundant purchases I have made in the past two years that have inspired this particular rant. These include an Amazon echo unit which I have listened to only once--I listened to it, when I initially installed it in the kitchen of our house, but I do not recall any of my family members ever using it--, and an Apple watch, that I only simply recharge occasionally to see if it is still working... I really can't bring myself to ask the echo for any information, or develop the habit of wearing an apple watch for jogging or doing my daily rounds...As for information that is supposed to be provided by Echo or the watch, I already get them on my iphone and tablets, so why bother? I already have Siri on any number of ipad tablets, and my iphone, not to mention my Macbook Pro, but I barely ever use it... And now this: For me. it feels like we are living in an age bombarding us with an overkill of device-redundancies, in which every new device attempts to duplicate what many others are already doing.... I am drawing the line here... Maybe my millenial daughters will find something new to do with this new homepod, but my own habits and needs are already set, for better or worse... and I am just tired of buying redundant gadgets... I dare anyone to show me a genuine need that this homepod can fulfill, one that is not already being fulfilled by other techie gadgets I already have...

If it's to play music, why don't they have a matching bluetoothed satellite pod, so they have stereo? /b

But it claims to do auto eq for optimal in room response. I'm looking forward to seeing reviews on that and if it is something they can expand upon.

Apple has jumped the shark. Fonzie would be proud.

I guess we are going to have to call Magico and tell them that it's time to retire! Apple's got something better and much smaller now!

Like Bose, Apple has only to TELL customers (that don't listen) what it sounds like and they will believe it AND BUY IT.

"Highest fidelity sound." I predict numerous audio companies will declare bankruptcy because of this product. They've been striving to create products at this level but Apple "beat" them to it.

Is it still analogue? Is the needle broken? 😋

The HomePod has rendered everything obsolete. I don't even need lights in my house anymore. The HomePod lights my house now. Every room.

Marketing aside, Apple is trying to get in on the Amazon and Google device market which is not a bad idea. It looks like the Homepod will have better sound.
It's also designed for home automation, controlling lights, curtains, door locks. etc. as long as the other devices are compatible with Homekit.
The problem that I have is my Nest thermostat and Nest Protects and Nest outdoor cam are not on Homekit. So that's out. I have a Wink that controls a couple lights. It's ok, but not the greatest.
The other problem I have is where to put it? My family room houses my 5.1 system and the Thiel speakers sing. My bedroom has a small modest 2 channel system that I rarely use.
The living room maybe? To be used when guests are over for background music.
The only way I can see buying this and making it useful is if my Nest products could be controlled by it.
Wait and see.

Have you guys read any of the actual reviews of the device by those who have actually heard it? Or did you come here to complain about Apple first? A nice roundup of initial reviews here: www.macrumors.com/2017/06/06/homepod-first-impressions/Of note, they compared it sonically to two other products in its class, and it blew both of them away. I don't think anyone is expecting this to compete with Macintosh gear. But that would seem to take away from all the points thus far in this thread, so maybe I should just keep quiet.
