As more and more DACs offer DSD support, I'm curious about those in the lounge.

All I know is what I hear. The jazz tracks and John Legend performances on the BluRay of La La Land sounded better than any DSD I've ever heard.

I have some dsd discs because that is how I got high resolution copies of those particular albums. I guess I could play DSD files through Jriver, but I usually purchase flac files when I purchase files.

I want all new formats to die the horrible deaths they deserve. No MQA, no DSD, no 4K HD. Between Vinyl, CD and 24/96 that's all we need.

The questions were not broad enough...no offense. I have several SACD CD's no DSD albums. I am currently streaming 95% of my music in HI-FI quality using TIDAL as my source. I find that my ears are the best tool to distinguish a good or bad recording. Too much technology is not always a good thing and can make audio listening more debateable as to what is the better format.
How much does the human ear actual hear whether a recording is analog, digital or SACD? It's all in the recording IMO. It is along the same lines as what people hear while listening to a SS amplifier compared to tubes amplifiers.
Way back in the DAY recordings are now considered to be prehistoric yet there are many well recorded music in the jazz, blues, classical and r&b venues.

It is along the same lines as what people hear while listening to a SS amplifier compared to tubes amplifiers. Way back in the DAY recordings are now considered to be prehistoric yet there are many well recorded music in the jazz, blues, classical and r&b venues. Bluemeanies I have listen to music for 50 years with the mind set of wanting sound quality. That happens to certain people. They want to hear music as clean as close to the source. Some people could not give a crap and never will. I can hardly hear the difference from a YouTube video playing through me PC to my DC-1 to my Airmotiv powered monitors and my Flac files. I can hear the difference on some and not others. My ears are still good and I have a long history of listening to all formats of the past and current. I have some SACD disk that I used to play in my sony DVD players and they were surround. They sounded good. The HDCD's that I have that I play on my ERC-1 sound good but they are good recordings and HDCD take them to 20 bit for real. I have never found a format that justified all recordings sound better because of it. The processing they do with movie sound tracks on a DVD or Blu-ray make something like the Troggs 'Wild Thing' sound like it is the best recording in history and we all know the original recording sounded like it was made on a Walkman. I think the band wanted it to sound that way but that is a different discussion. I could not vote because I own no DSD and do not plan to. I will not commit to just what they offer for PCM. There is and awful lot of digital music out there and who knows what the future will bring to use that digital domain in a better manner. Science is funny that way.

For me, I like high res music in whatever form I can get it. If it is on an old, thick lp that did not have the life mastered out of it, I will take it! Or ripping the music from a dvd or playing a sacd or buying a 24 bit file, I will take it if I like the music. I do not hear any advantage to sacd over other high res options. And before you start barking, some vinyl from the 70s and before stomps the cd releases of the same tunes. Some do not. The best Zombies tracks I have found were on their cd mastered by Steve Wilson. Highly recommended! The best bass I could find, about the only bass I could find on Fragile by yes was on the dvd-audio. Again, highly recommended.

IMHO DSD falls into the same category as MQA: a technology that we as listeners do not need, but They (those that profit from listeners) need to keep selling to us to keep the money flowing in. How many times should I buy the same music encoded in different formats? Yes, They got me a few times, but once an original master tape is ripped at 24/96 there is nothing more to be had there. Move along please.

Where is the choice for "DSD stands for Does Stupid Dreck"? No DSD for me. Yeah, I didn't think through the survey options enough. I should have specified DSD as purchased files versus SACD. I have this belief that the numbers of people who've actually purchased and downloaded DSD albums is microscopically small. I'm surprised so many DAC manufacturers are including such a niche format.

what is a dsd..... i got a bunch of cds DSD stands for Direct Stream Digital. It’s a high-resolution format that produces a high-resolution signal in a different way to that employed by the PCM system that can be transmitted as WAV, FLAC, ALAC or AIFF. What is DSD (Cambridge Audio Web Site)

Being stubborn as I am, I'll deliberately not learn from others' mistakes here - I want to hear MQA for myself.
