My bedroom setup: Emotiva UPA-500, UMC-200
Lately when I power on my UMC-200 which triggers the UPA-500 amp, I've been getting severe static/crackling out of the left front channel. If I turn off the UMC-200 manually keeping the amp on, the static continues, so I know it's not coming from the pre-pro.
After about 15 minutes of this nearly intolerable noise, it suddenly quit. After about an hour it came back again.
Nothing has changed, no equipment has been touched or moved. What could cause this loud static crackling noise? Is my amp going bad?
I use this setup every single day for years now. Help!

Change the RCA cable. See if the static follows it?

Your not new to this and a bad connection is the first thing you check for this unless you are pushing said amp to clipping. Does not sound like your were but most know if they are, clipping an amp will give a crackle sound. It's loud when it does and the sound is up because you are pushing it. An amp that is going bad does not crackle in my experience but the sound dies. Bad connections make a crackle sound but at any volume and the first place you look for a crackle sound. Change this Thread name if it is not a Bad 'static' sound on your UPA-500 because there are no reasons to blame the UPA-500 unless it is true.

There are some types of faults that will cause the amplifier itself to produce a "static crackling" noise.
It's easy enough to find out for sure. Try disconnecting EVERYTHING EXCEPT THE SPEAKERS from the amp and see what happens. If it still crackles with nothing connected, then it probably has a transistor which has failed in the input stage, and it will need to come in for service.

You would know that if a transistor failed in your amps that this may happen. Not me ! Bad connection is all I know that does this. Learn something everyday.

One test applied by techs would be to spritz each transistor with a tiny squirt of liquid freon. It's COLD and a bad transistor will show itself as will a bad solder.
DO NOT DO THIS without requisite skillset. Amp is ON when doing this and those largeish caps can hold quite a charge.
