Hello, I have purchased two Airmotiv S12 subwoofers, as part of my 5.2 surround setup. The problem is that both of these subwoofers are humming, one louder than the other, but both have noticeable hum in a quiet room. Below is a description of the subwoofer setup I have:
Marantz 8802A pre/pro, and cables from Blue Jeans Cable (Beldin 1800F type cable, XLR male/female) , one is 26 feet long, and the other is 10 feet long. The cables are connected the pre/pro and subwoofers using balanced connections. To the extent possible, I have tried to separate the cables from the power cords, but of course in the real world that is almost impossible. Where they cross, I have tried to cross the cables at a right angles. I have adjusted the subwoofers using the Auddyssey balancing system provided with the Marantz pre/pro.
One other point -- while both S12s operate warm to the touch, but not hot, one of the subwoofers operates at a higher temperature than the other. The S12 that is the warmer of the two has the lower hum; not sure if this is relevant
So -- any ideas why I have this hum, and what might be done about it? Any diagnostics I might perform?
Regards, WW

Are the subs plugged directly into the wall? Are they on the same or different circuit as the Marantz? Is there a dimmer switch on the same circuit as the subs?
Im trying to rule out a few things.

Since the Airmotiv S12 has been "out of stock" with no ETA since the issue with the amp was discovered, I assume you haven't purchased these recently as new units directly from Emotiva. If not, it's quite likely that your S12s suffer from the same issue discussed in the thread that Jim linked above. To me, it certainly does sound like the same problem.
Your best bet is to call Emotiva to resolve your issue and determine your best course of action.

Thanks for the responses.
I purchased the 2 subs directly from Emotiva just before Christmas 2016, and they were delivered sometime in Jan 2017. I read up on the prior problem, and yes, it sounds exactly like my problem. I unplugged the balanced cables, and the hum was still there. Also, I tried touching the speaker cone while the unit was on (and not in auto), and could not feel any vibration. So, the sound must be in the electronics. And like the previous problem, the hum goes away when the unit has been in standby (auto ON) a while, but is there continuously if auto is switched to OFF.
By the way, yes the front sub is plugged in to the same outlet as the Marantz. But, I have 4 dedicated lines in that area, so I can take it off that circuit, and put it on it's own. As for the back sub, that unit is plugged in to a non-dedicated outlet, so it may or may not be the same one I have dimmers on. I'll need to think about that one. Certainly I can try different circuits. But, based on the old posts, I think the problem lies in the electronics of the subwoofers.
Great. It had to be the heaviest items I ordered. I will call Emotiva tomorrow I guess. Hopefully I can get it resolved amicably, as the hum will drive me nuts otherwise. I thought this forum was a direct pipeline to Emotiva...I guess not.
regards,
WW

Thus I have added "pending" to my username:). No need to worry as Emotiva will not require to return the entire subwoofer. They'll likely just exchange the amps and provide you with self installation instructions. While various Emotiva staff members do participate in this forum, it is here for the enjoyment of the end users. We mostly help each other out. The only direct (and fastest) line to Emotiva is by calling them. They'll get you taken care of quickly...

The problem is that both of these subwoofers are humming, one louder than the other, but both have noticeable hum in a quiet room.... Yes, unless you can check to be absolutely sure it's not a ground hum, this is the problem I reported in the link Jim provided. I sent my sub back for repair in January. And, it's still there. I spoke to Emo staff earlier this month (not the first time I called them), and they indicated they were now doing their "final" testing on the replacement board in the subs (both S12's and S15's). I'm expecting to hear from them almost "any day" now. As their fix was to come up with a replacement board, it had to be "redesigned" and sent for manufacture. Apparently the (Chinese) factory had made a "minor" change to the original board in manufacturing them, and this caused the problem. The other good news is that, as the same problem was affecting the S15, once this passes final inspection the S15's will also be released for sale.

Okay cool. They told me 4-5 weeks (I called Aug 23, 2017), but didn't hint what the specific fix is. Thanks for the clarity on their plan to fix it. My hope is that they send the circuit board so I can swap out at home, rather than returning my two S12's.

The 4-5 weeks prediction (starting 8/23/2017) puts it out yet another month from my earlier in the month quote. Well, that's Emo time! (As opposed to Miller Time).

Just curious, did you only notice the hum recently? Or just start using them recently? Saw that you got them back in January. I have a couple subs boxed up.. unused... which is sad. Heh
