Just finished putting together a Raspberry Pi based touchscreen player running Volumio and connected to my XMC-1. Sounds great and gives me the ability to play anything stored on my home server. The touchscreen looks good on the rack but I can just as easily control it from a phone or iPad. The Pi recognized the XMC-1 as an output option as soon as I connected it via USB. It took more time to mount it in the rack than it did to build and configure. Attachments:

I get that it's largely hoby and part of the fun is building but could I also get a Kindle Fire or something , wipe it and install volumio?

Remember that Volumio is designed to be run "headless". While it can be connected to various dedicated screens, it's really designed to be run from a web browser. (There are various screens designed to work with the Raspberry Pi - and which can be connected directly to it. The last time I looked, the little ones weren't very impressive, and the big ones were quite expensive; and you're also asking the Pi to do more work.) However, you can run Volumio on the Raspberry Pi from any web browser. So, not only can you run Volumio from your computer in the next room, but you can also simply stick a tablet with a nice big screen and a web browser on the front of the box and use it as a display/control. I use a Raspberry Pi as a Roon endpoint in my home office. Works perfectly, and I'm getting FLAC quality streaming to my old Denon 4311 (with Emotiva monitors).

Keith is spot on. I already had a headless Pi at my office with a hifi berry dac connected to an old mac4100 receiver. I run that one from my pc or iPhone. I used the official raspberry pi screen and a new pi 3 on my home audio rack more for show than anything. I still use a phone or iPad to run it but the touchscreen is nice if neither are close by. I could have just as easily used the pi alone and put it on a shelf in the rack. Volumio has built in support for the official touchscreen so no additional coding required. No need for a separate dac since the pi connects via usb to the xmc and is all plug and play.

So I’m using a raspberry streamer with stripped down op system (dietpi) and gmrender as a DLNA program, all fed through audirvana on a Mac controlling a remote hd. I don’t need features that co ntrol playback and music data, but am wondering if Volumio is likely to improve sq over just audrivana.

For those using a Pi...just curious if you ever have issues with it just randomly appearing and disappearing from your network? Mine started doing this lately. I was going to play it yesterday, and went into JRiver and noticed it didn't show up as an option as a player. I didn't have time to fiddle around, so I ignored it. This AM, I went back in - and still not there. So, I unplugged the power, then plugged it back in...and there it was. I tried playing tunes through it and it said there was an issue w/the player. So, I disconnected the ethernet cable from it and then plugged it back in. Still no luck. I noticed it would appear in my list of devices then disappear. I decided to check outside of JRiver and went straight the the Volumio via the URL. It worked...at first. Now, it's not working even there again. Anyone have something like this happen? geebo and others? Mark

Mark I've only had something similar happen a couple of times but it was because my phone connected to the guest account instead of my main network. Switching it back fixed the problem both times.

Thx...I'll play around with it later today and see if it starts playing nice again. For now, I disconnected power and internet cable.

geeboIt seems as though a short "timeout" got it working again for now. Listening now... I was also wondering - I have heard some try to do Tidal via JRiver, but from what I have read - it seems to be a bit convoluted and even those who have gotten it to work seem to have playback issues. Have you tried it? I'd like to run Tidal via my Pi controlled by my MS Surface Pro 3...so far the only ways I have found to do that are pretty poor overall. Mark

I have a good bit of my music on a thumbdrive connected to the Pi and the rest is available to it via NAS.

Have you tried Roon? No - wayyy too pricey for the application I am looking into. I have other options I know work that are far cheaper than Roon and work fine. But, I'm trying to get things working with gear I already have. Mark

Gotcha...I think what I am going to do is what I should have done in the first place. I'm going to get another PC (a tiny NUC) with Windows 10 Pro on it. With it, I can replace the PC I have in my HTPC with the NUC. For controlling it, I can either use my wireless keyboard/mouse or use remote desktop on my MS Surface (which is how I prefer to control music to my systems anyway). Window native Remote Desktop works great, unlike many other options I tried. And then, on the system where the Pi is, I can use the existing HTPC desktop as the device serving my headphone station tunes. Then, I will use the Pi for something else...I already have an evil scheme. And, if I do this, I can sell 1 Sonos Connect Amp and 1 Sonos Connect...and I'll be down in # of devices and ahead in $.
