Hey guys looking to dig into this REW thing, but step one is getting the tones to play through the XMC and not have hook directly into the amps or sub. Small problem I have is my A/V equipment is in another room adjacent to my Theater room. I’m using a MacBook Pro, NO HDMI output. I purchased an USB extension for the microphone that came with the XMC. It is female to male so will plug into my MacBook. Then I purchased another USB male toe male to output from my laptop to the front USB port on XMC. Will this pass the tones, or do I need an adapter to go from USB to HDMI? If so any recommendations? All the ones I’m seeing on amazon have pretty low ratings, any help is appreciated.

To play music or test tones you have to use the USB type B port on the back of the XMC. Use a standard USB A to USB B cable.

There is a USA and USB input on the back of the XMC right next to each other, any reason to think use the USA over the USB? I only ask because I don’t have a USA to USB cable on hand. Just USB to USB. Thanks

Yes thanks Geebo, I was able to run tones for the front right and left individually and combined. For some reason the tones came through on the center channel as well, so I just turned off that amp. If I used and hdmi adapter would I have more option to select other speakers?

If I used and hdmi adapter would I have more option to select other speakers? Did you have the Mode set to Stereo? Or something like All Stereo or one of the matrix Modes like PLIIx? HDMI would allow all channels to be selected but only one at a time. At least that's how the ASIO drivers did for me on a PC.

Normally I would not have it on an all stereo mode but may have had it on by accident. Will check when I get a chance to fiddle with it again. I really just want to make sure my sub is in phase with my mains and then add a second sub, making sure they are all phased together. Then I will run Dirac. My new sub has a time delay knob so I should be able to get decent results that I haven’t been able to in the past. Seems like whenever I add a second sub all the punch goes out of my 1st sub.

[b Time a lign your subs to each other then run Dirac, you can't manually time align the subs with mains in Dirac. Dirac does that automatically.

Ah yes, thx Foggy, I forget Dirac takes over distances and such. I guess I could mess with it under preset 1 if I want to align the fronts. But otherwise I will focus on just the two subs for now.

Correct, also you can run each sub individually out of the xmc in either stereo or dual mono and allow Dirac to do it all.

Hmm I was told that dual sub won’t correct for phase, just equalize the subs, am I wrong there? I have tried this in the past and feel like there is no bass when running dual mono or stereo, perhaps I did something wrong. My placement options are crap in my room and they basically go where they fit which is one behind my recliners and one in front by the mains. For some reason I lose all the punch out of my nearfield (rear)sub whenever I add a sub up front. Tried identical subs as well, same thing. Dual mono also lost all punch from my nearfield sub. Not sure what I’m doing wrong here. Everyone swears by multiple subs but it actually seems worse in my room.

I recently just began getting the subs in the ballpark with the minidsp and then run Dirac with the subs set in dual mono or stereo mode to let Dirac set distances and final FR. So far I'm pleased with the result.

Run a sweep on each sub, check the spectragram for Max spl and adjust subs to match if they don't already. I really like the mini DSP between my xmc and subs

One thing I do differently, is that I also run a set of filters from REW into the minidsp prior to running dirac When I said I get them in the ballpark I meant in terms of FR. So I also create filters in the minidsp using REW. I let Dirac then adjust for distance/phase and final FR according to my target curve.
