My OPPO BDP-103D is set to output DSD for SACD and DVD-Audio for DVD-Audio. Playing a DVD-Audio and assuming it's Linear PCM, what does the listening mode "Surround Sound" do to the signal? I get all the other options. They are pretty well explained in the manual but, not much on this mode. What I notice is a little more bass notes from the front mains in this mode as compared to "Direct" mode.

"Surround" decodes the "native" format with no upmixing

"Surround" decodes the "native" format with no upmixing Is that in the manual? Did I just overlook it? I just don't see where that mode is addressed. I was thinking that is what I was hearing as my front mains sound as though they are set to large as compared to Direct mode which retains bass management. It's got me thinking about running Dirac with fronts set to large.

I think it's missing from the manual. What are your fronts?

As far as i know, there is no specific digital audio format for "DVD-Audio"..... so I'm betting they output as multi-channel -PCM. Well, it is multi-channel PCM 24 bit 96 khz. Auto mode selects PLIIx. I've got a pretty good idea of what it's doing there although considering the unit is receiving a multi-channel stream and PLIIx is intended to make multi-channels from two. Who knows. Still, I was wondering how the XMC-1 treats the multi-channel PMC when "Surround Sound" is the chosen output. Is it doing bass management? Does it apply Dirac in the same way it does all other PCM signals? Is there a way to pass the signal unaltered when it arrives via HDMI? Been a while sense I had fun tinkering with my audio system. ;-)

the PLIIx is for adding the back speakers DVD audio is 5.1 so do you have 7.1 ?

the PLIIx is for adding the back speakers DVD audio is 5.1 so do you have 7.1 ? Exactly. So, if I select direct mode instead of auto, it should drop the rear surrounds. Hmm. got to try it. Still, My other questions are unknown, I guess.

Direct should give you 5.1 surround sound with no other processing. Surround mode will give you 5.1 with Dirac or whatever other EQ you may have in the non-Dirac presets. This is assuming you have a multi channel system.

If its got a high bit depth/sampling rate it can be compressed using the mlp codec [ Meridian developed this ] Now the dolby truehd codec also uses a variation of the mlp codec and it uses the XMC1 full bass management and dirac so its a good bet that dvd-a mlp like your 24/96 disc uses the same. The XMC1 uses its 2nd processing chip to apply any dsp codec separately to bass management iirc. If the XMC1 had a limitation with the sampling rate etc it would/should be in the specs ..

Try playing it in Dolby ATMOS
