Star Wars is BY FAR the greatest franchise in Hollywood's history..... "Greatest" yes. But "Best," no. They are different. I'd personally give that to Harry Potter. Although Potter is also very high up on the greatest list too, at least top five. I don't think there is any other series made that is so repeatedly enjoyable to watch so many times over and over and over. And unlike something like Lord of the Rings, it's enjoyable for everyone, from young kids to old adults. Opinions, opinions, lol.....

By "Episode IV" was simple", I was referring to the plot. Good versus Evil. Small town boy gets a chance to make a difference. A Princess, a Rogue, a Wise Man, a couple of clowns. I think a lot of people at the time compared Episode IV to Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress (and I think even George Lucas may have mentioned that influence) ...
Don't get me wrong, I liked Episode IV despite its bad dialog, stiff acting and bad film editing. Probably because the simple story it was telling was least obscured by special effects, etc. For instance, I found Lucas' later efforts in the 90's to redo all of the special effects made the movies universally worse.

I see a little bit of bashing, Star Wars is BY FAR the greatest franchise in Hollywood's history, Rogue One being a stand alone was a success, let me see any basher come up with a anything. I don't consider myself in any way a Star Wars "basher" but IMHO Star Trek is easily the single greatest franchise, by a huge margin. Over 50 years of live TV series, movies, animated series, comic books, etc. Plus there is it's effect on our everyday lives, both socially and technically. Live long and prosper Cheers Gary

I don't see too many people getting excited about anything coming from Star Trek, and as much as I love Star Trek, I hated it when they tried to bring social problems to it so they could fix it.....Captain Kirk is still not as loved as R2D2.....DON'T get me started with characters. .....of course I love Spok, and beam me Scotty, but I mean come on. ..

Tough call. So many that I’m willing to rewatch. Lone Star, Serenity, Grosse Pointe Blank, The Princess Bride, Night of the Iguanna, To Kill a Mockingbird, ... without really thinking about it. I’d have to sit down and go through my catalog and think carefully about what I like in each one ...

Good old Ronnie and his Strategic Defence Initiative, even as as Aussie I am aware, too bad Slick Willie killed it off The quality of the actors in Start Trek just emphasises the difference, Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner, Sir Patrick Stewart, Christopher Lloyd, Benedict Cumberbatch, John Rhys-Davis, Kelsey Grammer, Idris Elba, Joan Collins, Frank Langella, Whoopi Goldberg, James Cromwell, Vanessa Williams, Christopher Plummer .............. the list is endless, including of course Aussies in Chris Hemsworth and Eric Bana ................ even Stephen Hawking has appeared in Start Trek. Then there is the science, real science, because Roddenberry used scientists in the creation processes. Communicators became flip phones, that's where Motorola got the idea from. The PADD (Personal Access Display Device), no keyboard, you just used your finger, we call it an iPad. Just like Dr McCoy, lasers are used to seal (cauterize) soft tissue wounds. "Phaser" stands for PHASed Energy Rectification and the US army has phaser like stun weapons that use microwaves. Many scientists and engineers point to Star Trek as their source of early inspiration. Cheers Gary

Star Trek may have better acting, more scientifically valid scripts, more sophisticated, etc., but I just ENJOY Star Wars from a purely emotionally entertaining standpoint. Same as why I like Independence Day. It's just fun to watch and you immerse yourself in the movie. Star Wars is comfort food.
Like trendy fancy food versus pizza, and burgers and fries. You just can't beat pizza and burgers and fries for pure eating pleasure. They always hit the spot.

They're all good for me, but I'm a sci fi and super hero junky, so right now I'm enjoying watching them all. Cheers Gary

Yes, some are "better" (whatever that means) than others, but they are just fun to watch. No mental processing needed!! AND what's any better than a big bag of popcorn or a hot dog while watching them....

Why can't typical Star Wars and Star Trek people just get along? It's amusing to me when one group thinks it's some how vastly superior to the other. Luckily my wife and I can love both series for completely different reasons. We are in the minority. That being said, since it seems to be the norm for people to overly dramatically bash Star Wars 1-2-3 (yet the worst of the series The Force Awakens gets praised ), how bout we bring the Star Trek people back to earth a bit, at least movie wise. Star Trek 1 and 5 are not only among the worst Sci-Fi movies ever made, they are among the worst movies ever made. And very close behind are 3 and 10. So Star Trek has 4 total complete duds in it's arsenal. Those 4 duds are significantly worse than even the least Star Wars movie(s).

The English Patient won best picture Oscar for 1996, but give me Star Wars any day. I found the title relevant, though, because it took all of my patience to sit still through that boring piece of pompous intellectuosity. Just like having a cheeezburger cheeezburger cheeezburger can be a lot more satisfying and enjoyable than food from some fancy leather-bound menu with descriptions beyond comprehension. Everything has its place but I'd rather be wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

That's like watching Roger Federer win Wimbledon 8 times and then picking out the points that he lost. Star Trek needs to be judged on the whole body of work, that spans 50+ years. As does Star Wars, there's things we like and things we don't like and most of all what I like others may not and vice versa. Merry Xmas to all Gary

We are a Star Wars and Star Trek house. The Next Generation was a phenominal show. We prefer it to the original. (Oh no you didn't, OH yes I did).

I'm with you, although the first 2 seasons of TNG sucked, they brought up the budget, it took off after that, I would actually wait helplessly a whole week to watch the next episode, Q, The Borg, lol.....
