Hey guys, can anyone tell me if there would be any benefit to going with a Sherbourn PT-7020A from an Emotiva XDA-2 as a Pre/Pro for a two channel stereo set up?
I just thought with my PT-7020C4 (which I think is similar outside of the C4 ability for installers and whole house audio) may come in handy as far as dialing in the bass and treble parameters. Not sure if that 7020A is the same set up as my 7020-C4 pre/pro or not but I like that option if it does. Also it offers the balanced outputs so I can still run XLR to my XPA-1's and 2's, plus I believe the option of adding a sub is available to both.
Would it be worth trying it? I am thinking the DAC in the XDA-2 is newer and possibly more refined but I never really listen to any of my HT in two channel so I honestly can't weigh in on how my 7020's sound with music.
Also, do you think I'm nuts for entertaining trading my Gen 2 XPA-2 and XPA-5 amps for Gen 1's? I really enjoy the higher gain in the first Gen and the sound itself sound crisper and more in your face than my Gen 2's do.
Thanks, Tim

Thanks Tim, The PT-7020 is essentially a UMC-1 with added XLR connections, the PT-7020's I have owned seem very good for 2ch use, it bested the Marantz AV7702 I owned between owing the 7020's and the XDA-2 is no slouch either, can you swap them in and out to try it. Try and find a PT-7030 if you can, your sig looks like you need a 7030 Chad

I had a pair of Gen 1 XPA-1's and replaced them with a a pair of XPR-1's and was sorta disappointed but did not want to admit it to my self that I thought the same thing about the difference in gain/sound. I sold the XPR-1's and did not regret it.

Thanks Chad, I have never owned the UMC-1 so I have nothing to compare to, but the balanced outputs are the reason I am entertaining the thought of getting the Sherbourn. I wish I had an easy set up to swap the PT out for the XDA-2, they are all kind of tucked away. Thanks for the help!
Thanks gsand, glad to hear that someone agrees with my way of thinking and has had a similar experience. I must admit I am surprised your feelings on the XPR-1's though, although after forking out that money not many would admit it even if that were the case. That makes me feel a bit better about me passing on them when I had a chance to grab them from a local seller here in Michigan.

I used a Sherbourn 7030 for my 2ch preamp (as well as as HT) for a long time I don't know how the 7020A is set up BUT the 7030 had a GREAT 2 channel bypass mode that "fooled" many of my "audiophile" friends thinking there was no way that the sound was coming out of that big black box! I would give the 7020A it a shot BUT ONLY if it has a true bypass mode! When I switched my 7030 from regular to 2CH bypass mode while actively listening to vinyl it truly was a night and day difference it went from pinched and narrow to open and spacious. As for the amps I used the XPA Gen2s bridged in my 2 channel system until the Bryston and my opinion would be do go with the XPA 1's all day long (or just sell 'em and get another amp(s) altogether...By the way I may be willing to part with the 7030 because we really don't do movies anymore since the kids went off to college...

Every time you post I slide down your signature looking at that Bryston 14 series amp and it makes me smile. Not sure I can afford a 7030, especially to dedicate it to two channel...although I don't think the 7020 has that two channel bypass you speak of. I will have to check on that. Thank you for some valuable input. Tim
