Help me build my first Raspberry Pi for Roon! If someone could post links for all the parts that would be great. I've built dozens of computers but never a pi and I'm a complete newbie to Room.
I would like the DigiBerry DAC (do I need the pro?) to have the option of fiber optic or coax if needed.
I would like to add a 7-10" screen.
I will need the case, power supply, memory card, etc.
This will be connected to my XMC-1.
Thanks in advance. I look forward to learning a lot!

Building the Pi itself is just a simple assembly. The real issue is the OS. My friend lives the simplicity of the RoPieee Distribution. Casey

If your going to run digital, through an Xmc dac , I think you are looking at the HiFiBerry Digi pro. There is also a competing board, I think it’s called a Digi one My question is that if you have a good quality external dac like an emotiva or schiit gen 5, do you get noticeably better sq with a hat that allows you to connect with coaxial.

That's fine. Just use a Raspberry Pi with RoPieee and feed USB from that into the XMC-1. You'll be done.

Why do you want the Touchscreen Case? Just get a simple case and power supply.

You just use you smart phone/tablet/laptop. No need for any display. If you want a display, I recommend simply mounting an iPad Mini on top of the table and you can pick that up any time to control the system.

I ordered the Flirc aluminum pi case, 32gb card, power supply, and pi motherboard.
I'll start by using my phone (Pixel XL) and the wife's old iPad as a display and go from there.
I'm not an apple guy but most on the Roon forums seem to like the iPad over the Android tablets for Roon controllers.

Okay... Probably another dumb question. But if I use RoPieee can I still use an iPad or Android tablet? Their website says only the official raspberry pi screen is supported but I suspect they mean if it's directly attached.

What the RoPieee folks mean is if you actually attach a screen to the Raspberry Pi.
You’re just going to use it as an Ethernet-to-USB Roon Endooint. Your “display”’will be your smart phone/pad/laptop/etc.

Ok I have another dumb question. Since Ropieee doesn't support any screen except the official Pi screen (which I won't have) how do I visualize and access all the settings on the Raspberry Pi itself once the card is installed???

@kyburbon - it's easy - the Raspberry Pi has an HDMI output. Connect that to a monitor and use a wired keyboard and you essentially have a Linux box at your disposal. Don't make it tougher than you need - get HiFi Berry and use their Raspberry Pi image. You'll use a micro SD card. Plug that into your PC, format it, and copy the image. Take the micro SD card to your Raspberry PI, plug it into the slot designed for it, and boot it. I admit that it took a little tweaking (first time, I didn't have the HiFi Berry properly seated on the motherboard, and I had some small boot issues), but I got there. Plus, the folks at HiFi Berry were great, and they have a very good forum at support.hifiberry.com/hc/en-us

I'm a little confused here..... If you're going to connect your Raspberry Pi to an XMC-1, then the easiest way is to connect the Pi to the USB input on the XMC-1, and use the DACs in the XMC-1. The Raspberry Pi has USB built in - and you won't need that extra board. I very much doubt the DACs in the DigiBerry are anywhere near as good as the ones in the XMC-1. (The only question is whether the Linux distro that Roon runs on has built in USB UAC2 support... if not, then this may not be an option.) Some people insist that the Coax or Optical connections sound better... Personally, I find the USB connection to be easiest, and I fail to hear a significant difference between them... Well... So far no good. I installed the ropieee to a brand new 32 gb Samsung micro-SD card using Etcher. Placed it in the Pi. Connected it to the internet via Cat6. Booted it up. Let it sit for 30+ minutes. And I can't find it either in Roon or via ropieee.localThe Pi has a nice long 1 green blink per second as expected. What did I do wrong?
