A bit old? It compares an Apple TV quite a bit older with than the Apple TV 4K with old versions of other streamers . Although they all have overlapping feature sets, the others lack the Apple ecosystem support. Besides, what's the guarantee that the other ones won't have similar problems with the pops?

I had to turn off the UI navigation clicks in the Apple TV settings because it causes a strange audio "pop" to happen with the XMC-1. I have tested this using the following methods: ATV --> XMC-1 --> TV ATV --> TV --> XMC-1 (ARC) Both have the same issue. See the video link (and turn up the volume). My XMC-1 is on hiatus, so I cannot compare, but I assume mine would behave similarly to yours. I own two ATV 4K units and neither shows this behavior. One is connected directly to my LG 55C6 in my living room, the other is running through my AV7703 to my 65C6 in my entertainment room. Both perform flawlessly. After listening to that video, I don't blame you for disabling the navigational clicks. This is definitely a misstep somewhere in the muting circuits and hopefully something that can be addressed in the newer revisions of the XMC-1.

From what I've read it seems like enabling Dirac makes the issue much more noticeable. Are you using Dirac? And yes, at some point I do plan to upgrade to the Atmos board. Do we know that this version of the DSP will fix the issue? Yes I have DIRAC Full, but I'm one of those that isn't having the same problem others are reporting. I also have Dirac Full. Used the Apple TV 4K last night without issue.

I've had every model of Apple TV up to the 4K, still have 3 of them, 2 in my house and one on loan to my daughter. I have used them with Oppo 105 and 205, an Onkyo AVR, a couple of Denon AVR's, a Yamaha AVR, a UMC-1 and currently with a UMC-200 plus 2 Sony TV's and 2 different model Samsung model TV's, the current one of which is 4K. I can't say as I have noticed any difference in the navigation tones, apparently that's what we are supposed to call them Cheers Gary

I was using my Shield the other day and paid more attention to the navigation. I now realize why I wasn't noticing any clicks/pops. The muting is so aggressive that I almost never hear any navigation noises.
If the click/pop or disabled navigation tone is a big issue, I wouldn't just blindly assume future hardware upgrades will solve it. There is always the possibility of no improvement or, worse, a regression.

The combination works without a hiccup for me.

I have a pre-order XMC-1 that was from the original shipping batches and have had an AppleTV the entire time. The issue is 100% with the XMC-1 firmware. Early firmware did NOT have this issue. They issued an update that changed something with the audio along the way. I don't remember what version, but it was probably around v2. I don't remember what the original issue was, but some people were having some issues with audio initialization and their fix was to delay the audio output or something like that. I'm sure if you can find the docs for old firmware you can find some notes.
So basically what is happening is that the AppleTV is not outputting an audio signal when sitting idle. When you scroll one position it creates a short sound and then outputs nothing again. This situation is what is causing the XMC issues. Notice you don't have a problem if you continue tapping to scroll since the audio is constant outputting something in that situation. I really wish they would address this.
