I guess part of what we are dealing with here is the average consumer goes for the AVR with the amplification built in and the market for preamp processors is just not large enough to support that many different models. That said I have no doubt that someone can and will make a real bang for the buck preamp processor that comes in somewhere around $1500. A far as NAD I'm only seeing a AVR version currently so I don't know if they dropped the pre-pro or what. Until then I will probably go with the MC-700. NAD have two multi-channel pre-pros, the T187 and M17 V2. They are priced around $3,000 and $6,000 respectively, so certainly not in the price range being discussed. I had a NAD T752 5.1 AVR for many years. Great sounding device, even in 2-ch, with gobs of power for an AVR. You know what? I had not checked NAD AVR line up for a while. The T758 AVR with a separate 2-ch or 3-ch amp to beef up the front channels would probably not be half bad as poor man mid-range pre-pro. At $1,299 the price is right. It has HDMI 2.0a, HDCP 2.2 and it comes with Dirac Live. It supports Atmos, HDR 10 and will do DTS:X with a future firmware update.

The NAD 758 V3 was in my short list for my bedroom setup but the lack of OSD toke it out of the list. It's a great receiver and the cheapest way to get Dirac Live these days. If you don't need more than 3 HDMI inputs and OSD then it's a great alternative. BTW, the last video firmware update (1.09) enable Dolby Vision.

Really, no OSD?? From the description it looks like it does have it. I guess some sleigh of hand from marketing? 😁 There has to be some fine print somewhere.
And yes, only 3 HDMI inputs is a bummer. I guess another trick to push you upstream to the T777. But at basically twice the price the value equation gets disrupted.

The Anthem AVM 60 currently is selling for $3000 and I would probably go with Anthem over the NAD as far as a preamp processor. I have owned really nice sounding stereo NAD preamps and amps in the past and have nothing against the brand but I think the AVM 60 is really nice. All that said I would go with the Emotiva XMC-1 if I was spending anything over $2000 and get something made in the USA since it also is a really nice piece. Just wish I could get something in between the MC-700 and the UMC that had the audio specs of the XMC-1 without the FM tuner or zone capability. I have a surround sound receiver in my computer room if I want to hear FM.
The Rotel I'm using has HDMI but not all the latest codecs or 4K so I send one HDMI output to the projector and one to the Rotel and settle for Multi channel DTS or Dolby Digital for now. Also I need Dolby plus surround from a fire box. It streams really nice looking 4K but no surround without Dolby plus. I have my side surrounds mounted up pretty high and my back surrounds even higher so I already get pass over effects in this room that are really impressive so I don't really see Atmos as a must have.
It is still an option for me to go with the MC-700 since I think I would be happy with it for movies and if I'm not satisfied with it for serious music listening I have DACs and preamps that I could use. I am assuming that the MC-700 would do Dolby plus surround from a fire tv device?
