this will be a good one for y'all out there especially Keith.
when I get my new RMC/XMC whatever to replace my original XMC I am going to need to either add an adapter to each of my cables that run from the prepro to the amp or I will have to replace said cables. right now I have a group of 5 rca cables (bluejeans) running from the prepro to the XPR-5 and they are 22 ft long because of where the XPR-5 had to be placed. which is a better sonic choice? stay with my bluejeans cables (which were quite pricey for the custom lengths and colors) and add the short adapter to the prepro, or should I just replace the five cables with five 25 ft XLR cables at a modest cost of about $54 from mono price? what say Y'all.............
btw.... for those who are into very expensive cables and hear substantive differences between such cables, that is really not my thing and I am not really interested in going there. notice, I did not cast aspersions on anyone's preference, I just want to know should I stay with blujeans+adapter or go with new XLR's.

You should have made this a poll. At that length I would vote for replacing them with balanced cables. But, if the adapters are significantly cheaper, then do that.

A perfect application to go with a “blue jeans” reasonable quality ( or Monoprice) and price range XLR, though at 25 feet minimum were it I, no adapters, just solid runs. Nothing at all wrong with adapters, but again at those lengths, I prefer to avoid those additional connections on the same run. Bill

I recommend you go to ProAudioLA.com and order one five channel XLR snake cable. This one cable will use Mogami 5 channel snake wire and Neutrik black gold XLR connectors. Simply put you can't do better and this is what you'll see at most professional recording studios. The one I use is a 20 ft long 8 channel that goes between my XMC-1 and my XPA-5 and XSP-1 for seven channels and the XSP-1 sub input. Here's a 5 channel it's a single cable (externally) except the last 18 inches at each end. Here's mine in use, you can only see the XLR's at their connections with the XPA-5 in this pic

A couple more pictures of Mogami snake cable and Neutrik XLR's this is what is the gold standard of XLR's, excellent high quality and excellent sound quality. Mogami wire and Neutrik connectors are pure high quality, rock solid build and they are priced for quality, not audiophile gimmicks. Mogami wire is pure OFC copper, ultra flexible, with excellent RFI protection, Mogami snake cable is capable of runs 100's of feet long. It has a very neutral sound quality that just seems to bring out a little extra detail. . Here is a better pic of a Mogami snake cable. This one is 8 channel and has an older style Neutrk XLR These are the newer style Neutrik XLR black/gold connectors. Rugged zinc diecast shell, chuck type strain relief, boot with polyurethane gland.

I don't see any color markings or other indicators on these cables. How do you know which male goes with which female?

I don't see any color markings or other indicators on these cables. How do you know which male goes with which female? There are numbered shrink tube markers on each channel, also if wanted there are two ways they can optionally be colored, either a colored boot or colored ring can be used. This picture is the standard black, you can see the numbered markers 1 & 2 here. In this pic one XLR near the center has a red ring while another XLR to the right has a red boot.. These are available in many colors, the ring can be installed anytime but the boots must be installed before the XLR is soldered to the wires Here's a pic of a colored ring and boot by themselves, the boot has an original black ring on it in this pic.

I would opt for a new complete set. Adapters put in another chance for a loose connection down the line.

I agree. 20+ feet is a good candidate for balanced cables.

THANKS GUYS FOR YOUR INPUT (no pun intended).
you have convinced me. I am going to change over to balanced cables. the only ones that will need an adapter are the subwoofer cables since my sub amps do not have an XLR input.

You can get a cable with RCA on one end and XLR on the other. Monoprice has them.

I believe if you use an adapter that the connection is no longer balanced, so there is no advantage in doing that over using a normal RCA cable. Also, regarding Monoprice XLR cables - I had a couple of instances in which I discovered the pins were not wired correctly. That may have been a rare occurrence but even so, out of about a dozen or so, two were defective.

Another vote for ProAudioLA.com
I ordered some custom balanced cables from them and am incredibly happy.

If you use zip ties every few feet, it'll be as convenient as a snake ... Casey Not really a snake cable uses it's twisted design to remain very slim and it's ultra flexible as well, this makes it especially nice for long cables. Yes you could bundle 5 cables with ties but it would be a very thick and have awkward flexibility. One of the main nice things about snake cables is the one slim very flexible cable, yet with its twisted design it is an extremely good design against RFI, it is often used in cables 500 ft long or even longer in professional use. Snake cable just makes a very nice and tidy long cable and Mogami wire is really really good stuff! A 5 channel snake cable will have a diameter of about 3/8", while five standard cables bundled together will typically have a diameter of around 1 1/4" or more. An 8 channel snake is still under 1/2" in diameter.

BTW ProAudioLA.com usually makes custom makes their cables to order and can do custom requests. Small orders usually ship a day or two after ordered. They can also make you an XLR to RCA cable for your non XLR subwoofer. Here's one www.proaudiola.com/product-p/1-m2549-xlrf-rca-1.htm

I ORDERED THREE 25 FT CABLES FROM MONOPRICE. I ALREADY HAD 2 SITTING AROUND. IF I DON'T LIKE THEIR PERFORMANCE I WILL GIVE THE MOGAMI'S A TRY AT A SUBSTANTIALLY HIGHER PRICE. BUT FOR NOW I AM HAPPY I MADE THE ORDER. NOW TO WAIT FOR THE NEW RMC OR XMC.
